  • Building regs passed our work this morning, so in celebration I ordered these light fittings (25% off...so money saving!:money:) for the kitchen/diner/lounge

Our poor kitchen is still a lot more shabby than chic (photos on my homepage if anyone's interested), but once it's finished I can start painting bits to decorate with again. I miss pretty bits!! :o
  • Hi all,

thankyou so much for the kind comments. It really was a money saving project as we couldn't afford a new kitchen so this is how we achieved the look:

    1. washed down kitchen cupboards with sugar soap, sanded down cupboards, painted with primer, then 3 coats of Dulux buttersilk on top and Dulux Gooseberry Fool 3 on bottom (closest match to farrow and ball french grey but cheaper).

We kept the cupboard doors on during the whiole process and also painted the inside and round the doors (basically all the kitchen) as it looks alot better like this!

    2. Got the wood laminate worktop 2*4m lengths for £125 - it looks amazing!!! It would have cost a fortune for natural wood because the kitchen is so big!

    3. Got the sink taps on ebay for £33 including delivery! Much dearer on high st shops.

    4. Ceramic sink (£189 b&q) - okay this was dear but is amazing looing and so functional!

    5. Wall tiles - Homebase Montana (not on website but in shop) got the lot for £99, and loads left over.

    6. Floor tiles - Homebase Cuba White (on website) covered the kitchen/utilityroom/hall (huge area) for £200!!! £7.99 per metre and get on a discount day, even better!!! They look amazing down, easy to clean, couldnt be happier with them.

    7. Dresser - got on gumtree, was that horrid orange colour, sanded down, painted and varnished.

    8. Table and chairs - got at auction (but you can get similar on gumtree etc), sanded down, painted, vasrnished etc.

    9. Oil cloth - Dunelm - cheap compared to other shops, table was very large so sewed 2 bits together, works well.

    10. Accessories etc..... all dunelm, could praise the shop enough, love all the stuff!!

Hope this helps you create your own money saving kitchen!!! Havent quite finished it, but will post more pictures when complete!

I'm shabby chicing(?) up a rocking chair for my mum as a Christmas Present and i need a little advice if anyone could help please.

I got the rocking chair from freecycle:

Which i have so far sanded, only i ran out of sand paper so i haven't quite finished that part :P

I'm planning to paint it white (as you may guess) but i'm unsure on what paint to get. I haven't got a great deal of money. Also do i need to put a finish on it?

Also just incase your wondering, i have a seat part (which i took off for sanding), i'm covering it in this:

Sorry its not the best picture of fabric in the world.

I absolutely love your kitchen crusty. It makes me wish that we'd had a wood one her when we moved in. Mine's been in 4 years and the cupboards are starting to split already. It's getting quite shabby :( DH will kill me if I ask for a new in the next 6 years though. I reckon I can get away with it after 10 years though, let the kids leave home and tell him we're getting a good quality one this time. I wish I'd held out and got the solid oak kitchen I wanted but it was a scary price and we were soooooo skint. Never mind heh?

  • Hi everyone

I'm just waiting to receive this spice rack I brought off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250723278464&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_895wt_1127 and I can't decide weather to 'shabby chic' it or just polish it, so I would love to know what everyone on here would do - would you shabby chic it or just polish it and have it as it is? Also, if you would shabby chic it, where would you paint and where would you leave as it is? Would you put wallpaper/fabric in the back?

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm hoping it will be here tomorrow so would like to get it painted, or polished on the weekend:)

Gosh FelinePrincess, that is a hard decision. It is lovely. I think that I would be tempted to paint it if that would fit in with your kitchen more. I personally would paint it all over, no wallpaper and keep it quite simple. Although it is lovely as is. Lucky you
