That's a nice dresser Keiss. I think if you want a light oak effect then you would need to strip off all the varnish and then sand it too. You could just sand but it may leave spots of varnish. The sanding will strip away the dark stain from the wood.
I have seen some lovely dressers on the bay which started out almost black and have come up a lovely honey oak colour.

DH said last night that I can paint DD's bedroom furniture if I want so now I have to decide whether or not I want to. I think I do but I don't want her to get to the age where she wants it stripped down again and expects me to do it :D
If I do, I shall go for a white eggshell as she's having her room lilac and blue or green (pastel colours). The white would look lovely with these so I may just bite the bullet and do it for her. I did say I would look for new handles for her when The Range opens up.
No closer to finding a dresser for my dining room but I need to go to Ikea next week to get DS's drawers for his bedroom. I shall see what they have there on offer :D and DH won't be there so I can get what I want :D:D:D
Love the phone table too, I want one but will wait until the hallway is done as I don't have space for it yet!

Keiss, that unit will look lovely painted. As for my table, I actually bought one off eBay for her and I loved it and did not want to paint it so I looked and found another one (the one you said I should not paint), so I have no choice I have to paint it, I have got no more space :p Also, it looks a lot better in the photo, it is quite grubby and banged up....

    Can I ask about nitromors?

Does it 'bubble up' the piant? How do you actually get the paint off the item? Scrape, sand, wipe. lol as you can see I'm clueless.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Kaz...thanks, yes I was planning on sanding it down. We have an electric one, which I used on my marbled topped unit a few months ago...the black back came up beautifully! Our dining table is solid oak..we bought it when we were living in Holland in the '80s, took ages to find a light oak one! It is oval, with a central leg...the top is over 2.5" (7cm) thick! It needs stripping (was varnished when the kids were young to protect it. I will be waxing it this time...at least that is the plan...will have to wait for next year though!! We will be redecorating the conservatory then...cream woodwork and red walls...can't wait!! We don't "do" white or cream walls (unless we add more colour on top :D:D!). As we have uneven wall everywhere, we can't use wallpaper, so paint it is.

Bebs...that was my original thought...we'll see how it looks when it is stripped and sanded. We have a few good bits of light oak furniture, and would love it if it comes up nicely, if not, then it's back to the good old paintbrush!! It's a shame you will have to paint the desk...though you can alays strip it back in the future...more hard work, but at least you will have the choice, if you want to!!

Talking of painting..must go and wash down DS2's room this morning so I can get the first coat on this afternoon...using the same paint colours as before (Dulux: Willow Tree on the walls and Amazon on the woodwork. We have got "new" (less than one year old, good quality, lovely colour - £10!) carpet to go down and have a new duvet cover. Both go really well with the colour scheme...DS2 is really looking forward to when it is finished!! We did look at using different colours...but DS2 kept coming back to the same colour scheme!

We may be painting some Maori/Polynesian-style designs on the walls ...this has been the plan for a few years, but determined to get some done this time. DS2 is a keen rugby player, loving the All-Blacks, so it should go down well. He is now old enough (17) to create his own art, and will reach the corners better than me, when he isn't playing rugby that is!! :D

Have a great day, hope there wasn't much damage caused by last night's "breeze"!!

I popped in to ask, how can I share pics now as I think Flickr doesn't allow direct linking now?

I've used Nitromors to remove layers of varnish but I expect it would be the same for paint...

You paint it on thickly with a paintbrush, leave for a while (possibly 10mins) then apply another coat and leave again for a while, then you scrape off, I used a wallpaper scraper tool for large flat surfaces. It is not very hard work but not as easy ad just wiping off.
It does bubble but only tiny ones so it just looks like the clear solution os turning cloudy. I found it needed sanding afterwards to remove every last bit.

Keiss - that unit will look great once you have worked the magic. Please put on pics! I used Willow tree in our bedrrom once, it's a really beautiful soft colour.

Le Foot - thanks forf the inspiration, I have been looking for a teeny stool for my bedroom for ages, but these nests of tables are always going for 99p on ebay - will definitly give it a go after seeing how good yours looks.

Thanks very much for the info on nitromors. I'm going to place something on ebay to offset the cost, allbeit pounds but still, had a radicle over haul of spending lately.

just applied on freegle for a fireside chair with wooden handles in need of upholstering. i do hope i get it :)

Thank you for posting this ANNEGEDDES . We love EB! I've got the polka dot crackers for Christmas Day and the small pink ones for DD to use on her tree. No washbags or travel stuff in ours (at least I couldn't find them near the purses). Was tempted by some photo albums and a tote bag.
