    Hi NewLeaf, :hello:

Miss Malaprop lives in another world, doesn't she? If you've copied her comments as written, I'm appalled that someone obviously holding down a high-salaried post has such a poor command of language.
..The thought of sharing a room with that mentality would drive me to do something drastic in order to avoid it - a bottle a night would not be sufficient anaesthetic!

I had to Google David Yurman. Very nice. But you've made the right decision; that kind of possession is most useful as a kind-of hard-to-get-at savings fund. Grandma would approve. :)
NL I think I msut have missed you post where you mentioned your electricity costs.

Not sure how relevant it is, but we pay £250 per month , therefore £3000 exactly per year on our dual fuel

 Mrs PG that sounds really high - do you live in a huge old hard-to-heat house?
  • I am not so sure that you should sell your jewellery - could you make contact with Collections first and see where the land lies?

Collections tend to be easier to deal with than the normal office people.

I would hate for you to sell your jewellery when they might be in agreement with your offer of £85 per week.

    That's terrifying.

My Gas and Electricity costs £42 pm, which is £504 pa.

Do you live in the Arctic or something

    Good point.
Would the sale of stock + jewellery raise sufficient funds to pay off the whole bill? Vaporise the problem in one fell swoop?
If so, maybe worth it to start again 'with a clean slate' - get rid of the stress..
If not, how far off £340 is one/thirty-sixth of your debt (looking at monthly figure and three year repayment period)?

NL, harking back to your reason for cancelling the DD in the first place - the fear that THEY might change the amount taken - according to the bumf I was sent after setting up a similar repayment agreement, THEY will write to you a couple of weeks before trying to take the new amount, so you do have a chance to 'phone up and protest if there's not enough in the bank to cover THEIR DD.

When I discovered my own mistake, I spoke to the only RL person I know who works for THEM* before doing anything (*although he's a senior in the VAT dept. so couldn't look at my problem in detail). His advice:
    1. Get in touch with THEM - don't wait until THEY uncover your error.
    2. If you can't afford to repay whatever is owing at once, ask for a repayment plan (he said the max length is three years - which is what I was offered when I did 'phone THEM to sort it out).
    3. Offer to pay by DD (ticks "compliance" box).
    4. Always ensure there's enough in the bank to cover the DD - but if you realise a payment is due to fail, 'phone THEM before that happens.

Sorry, wish I'd posted the above earlier now. :o Trouble is, that is the sum of my experience which I didn't consider sufficient to be useful; hoped other posters had better knowledge.

When I started my diary a year ago our electric was £115 per month for an ancient three-bedroomed house with no gas supply. I have managed to get it down to £73, by firstly changing my tariff and secondly being very miserly. I can't seem to reduce it below that, possibly because it is powering one VERY huge and bright light-bulb :rotfl:.

It's a big and very personal decision about whether to sell your grandmother's jewellery. If you decide to sell it I'm sure your grandmother would have understood. Personally I now value peace of mind above any possession so I would sell it; in fact I would only just stop short of selling my actual grandmother :D. (Grandma if you ever read this, I'm only joking!!)
LBM Dec 2011. Aimed, but failed, to clear all unsecured debt by Feb 2019. Finally free of unsecured debt 21st May 21!

    Debt Dec 11: Unsecured £69,579 + Mortgage £59,948 = £129,527
Debt May 21: Unsecured ZERO! ZILCH! Mortgage £22,332
  • Hey NL & Mrs PG
Your posts searching me out did make me chuckle :rotfl::rotfl:I dont have a diary, I just pop up in others all over the place.

Sorry i just popped in with my self indulgent post and then disappeared :o Been so tired lately, its work, eat, sleep this week.

Sorry you have been sent to collections, I also agree that for piece of mind it is worth selling the jewellery and keeping the one piece for sentimental reasons. I know my Gran would prefer me to be able to sleep at night over having some nice jewellery.
Will the stocks and the jewellery pay the bill off in full? Then you can get back on an even keel for this year.

Sooooo, I did indeed hand my notice in  And as soon as I had done i felt a million times lighter so it reinforced that I had made the right decision. They have been great and I have had a million meetings/calls with various people trying to change my mind and even offered time out of the business (month) to then come back and retake up my job!!! It had been incredibly humbling to realise how well thought of I am. However the reasons for leaving remain the same and therefore so does my decision. :D:D

How did your ebay selling go NL? Sorry if i have missed it but I had about 5 pages to catch up on :D

    Have a good weekend x
  • Just thought I would also chip in on the gas/elec debate. £93 a month for both, 3 bed semi, out at work minimum 10 hours a day.

Bedsit. £180 pa  How on earth do you manage that?
