Is anyone familiar with the East suburbs or Norwich? Thorpe St. Andrew always comes recommended while the Heartsease area next door seems to be a no go, does anyone know what the border of these 2 locations (specifically Plumstead Rd and Woodside Rd) is like?

I live 4 miles east of Norwich, just off Plumstead Road. This end of Plumstead Road, around Thorpe End, is lovely, in fact Thorpe End itself is, in estate agent-ese, highly desirable and pretty expensive. Avoid Heartsease like the plague.

Dussindale may be worth a look - I drive through it heading for Sainsbury's and the bits I've seen look pretty nice.

In this area, you need to check the route for the new road, the NDR, which looks increasingly likely to go ahead and will affect parts of Thorpe St Andrew, Postwick, and various other places.

I like Thorpe End but there seems to be very little on the market in that area. Because I need to be fairly close to the A47 to get to the coast and West of the city for work, that ruled out Sprowston/Hellesdon - I worked in the city centre until recently and felt sorry for the poor sods trying to get round the ring road from the Postwick junction when I was driving home in the opposite direction.

Had a second viewing on something last weekend, offer 5% under asking rejected and then sold the next day. On the plus side, the 3 places I've been interested in sold within a week - must be picking the right ones!

I lived in Norwich (Catton) 35 years ago. I met my wife of nearly 33 years there. We have moved around the UK extensively and I am now retiring. We now live in Scotland where we were happy for many years, but sadly life here is deteriorating fast, courtesy of the SNP government. Anti-English racism is burgeoning, our children have all moved south (revolted by anti-English attitudes), and we intend to move back soon after I retire next month.
I always found Norfolk very welcoming 30+ years ago. Is that still the case? Or will (slightly) wealthy incomers experience problems? Where should we look with a budget of up to around £650k?
I don't know if you moved yet, but if not sell up and get down here. You can relax, take off the suits of armour that horrible people force you to wear and enjoy life in Norfolk. Can I suggest you rent in Dereham for a while ?. It's the dead centre of Norfolk so Norwich and the North Norfolk coast are about 1/2 hour away. It's on the A47 and has all the shops etc you need. I have found, as in all places, the only people that are made to feel unwelcome are those with airs and graces. Norfolk folk are ENGLISH with all the foibles that go with that, and a great sense of humour. They haven't changed much. There is so much to do and see. Please come back. Best wishes finding your new happy home.( You may like the area around Holt ).

    Hmmmmm!
Do either of you onetime posters live near a bridge?

That sounds horrid, are you still in Scotland?

Some late relatives lived in Clenchwarton. Such a long village - I think it was 1.5 miles from the village shop. Got to drive everywhere.

  • Hi, hope somebody maybe reaching this post has some useful information regarding moving to Norfolk. I have just watched Homes under the Hammer and they were showing a place called East Runton which looked lovely. We are thinking of considering (recently retired) a possible move to an area of Norfolk with good beaches (maybe a property overlooking the beach would be fantastic) Reading the previous posts on this site and everyone seems really helpful, would appreciate if anyone has time to hear recommendations/warnings!! Thank you

My recommendation is Winterton-on-Sea. Lovely unspoilt, undeveloped village in a beautiful area with one of the best beaches in the country. Its remote enough for peace and quite but also within easy reach of civilisation for getting to shops, supermarkets etc. Housing is also relatively cheap compared to the North Norfolk coast.

My warning is to be aware that much of the Norfolk coastline is eroding so do your research thoroughly, before moving too close to the sea.

PS You may like to catch this programme on Thursday evening. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/homes-by-the-sea
  • Hi all, very new to this so apologies for the terrible post.
Husband and I are wanting to move from essex to diss Norfolk. Anyone actually live there? Good or bad reviews? Actually worried about some other posts saying that neighbiurs are not very friendly to outsiders :-/
