Watton not the best so I have been told, quite close to market town of Dereham which has much better aminities...
  • I lived in Norwich (Catton) 35 years ago. I met my wife of nearly 33 years there. We have moved around the UK extensively and I am now retiring. We now live in Scotland where we were happy for many years, but sadly life here is deteriorating fast, courtesy of the SNP government. Anti-English racism is burgeoning, our children have all moved south (revolted by anti-English attitudes), and we intend to move back soon after I retire next month.
I always found Norfolk very welcoming 30+ years ago. Is that still the case? Or will (slightly) wealthy incomers experience problems? Where should we look with a budget of up to around £650k?
  • Hi Allan.

Holt is a very popular village. I quite like Coltishall too. :)

I moved to Norfolk in 1973, so around the same time as you. You'll find no problems with incomers - the vast majority of the population now seems to come from outside the county.

For general facilities suitable for everyone, including our age group, I'd look at Wroxham and Hoveton - got its own active community, decent houses in your price bracket, good shopping locally, railway station, decent bus service and near to Norwich.

Norfolk is still a lovely place to live.:)
  • I was doing some searches online and came upon this forum - so I joined thought I'd reach out for some advice.

I am inquiring about places to live in the UK more specifically within 20-30 minutes of HOLT and thought that many you are there & settled you might be able to offer me some advise.

About us: My inlaws are moving to HOLT. My husband and I are considering relocating from USA to and want to be within 1/2 hour of them. My husband will work mainly out of the home so commute to London, etc is not important. We have seen a few places online in Sheringham which seems like a nice coastal community.

About us late 30's, two kids (4 & 2) so schools are important but not at the high school level as we vision we'll rent for a few years to ensure we hare happy there vs coming back the US. I'm American, he is Dutch. We are a mix of Hippy & Yuppy.

We prefer city living but with a garden or access to outdoor space. As I'm a stay at home mom, I want to have a good sense of community where I can meet and be around other families - so I do not want to live in an old farm house miles from a town alone.

I'd love to hear first-hand from someone who has moved to the area and do you feel welcomed, what is the most family-friendly area, etc.
I saw the town of Sheringham online and thought it was very cute, seaside community. Is there a bit year-round base of families or is it truly season, holiday home area.

If there is more questions I can answer which helps, please ask.

My (late) father bought a holiday home in Sheringham, and I have been going there 2 or 3 times a year for the last 40 years! In answer to your questions:

There is a large permanent community, but with a lot of retired people. Not that many holiday homes, but lots of summer guests. There are lots of local families, but local wages are low and it is hard for local people to be able to afford to buy. I have no experience of the local state schools, but I suspect that they are not very good. There are good local private schools, eg Gresham's in Holt and for primary Beeston Hall School.

There is a strong local community, but much of it is based around the local churches, so if you are not religious you may find it harder to mix in. The place is small enough that I am not sure that it matters whether you find a 'family-friendly' part of the town. I would say, though, that the majority of the local families are in the estates built around the outside of the town in the last 40 years.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • Has anything changed in the past 18 months? We live in South Norfolk. I like Wymondham market and some of the people who live and work in the town, but otherwise I find it pretty dull. We are thinking about moving to a village near Diss. Diss seems a bit grim with endless supermarkets and massive trading estates, but at least people are doing something there. I am told that property nearer the Suffolk coast is more expensive. Is it true? What am I missing? Thetford Forest is lovely. The Buckenhams are pretty. Norwich is very good to potter about in. I would prefer to be in Suffolk. The local schools to Diss and around seem good. Does anyone else have any ideas???

North Norfolk would be your cup of tea I'm guessing, you budget would get you something fairly decent.
