Best and Worst places to live in Norfolk???

Just as well you were born in Norfolk if your planning to move back. Remember to drop that into every conversation whenever meeting your new neighbours and also that your family are still here. The yokels are very clicky and hate Londoners, people from Essex and Kent. I've had no end of trouble, been attacked and stalked by a man. After various reports to police which did nothing I then fronted the guy and told him to push off. The police then gave ME a harrassment warning and told me to stay away from HIM. Rubbish was repeatedly dumped in my garden. Local gossip mongers enjoyed making up all kinds of untruths about me. I had to install CCTV because of repeated damage to my car and home. Local builders if they can be bothered to turn up do a crap job and then scream obscenities 'C*NT' and demand outrageous sums of money when you complain. I had one guy create thousands of pounds worth of damage to my home. Another workman sent from a cleaning company to clear up the mess went through my lingerie draw, masterbated into something he found in there, then left the item covered in semen in my bathroom. The police didnt want to know. Really, if I were going to make a recommendation I'd stay in Surrey if i were you, its much more civilised
Well that's not very nice, but really in the big scheme of things Norfolk is lovely. We live in a village not far from Acle and I wouldn't live anywhere else. People are really friendly, they say "Hello" because it's a nice thing to do, in our village if you grow more veggies than you need people put it out for the locals to help themselves to, locals sell their eggs from hens in their garden with a trust box in their front garden. There's a nice community feel, people become "local" very quickly! My parents live in the city towards the UEA and it's still nice busier though but it all depends what you are looking for.0 -

Ooo my parents now live in a village near Acle. It's lovely!
The neighbours are fantastic, the village is beautiful with well kept gardens and it's very peaceful....until we all get together for a BBQ or drinks that isWe get our eggs from a lady down the road and have access to the broads at the end of the garden.
Everyone has been so welcoming, made my birthday the best ever this year!
Anyway, old thread, I'll stop gushing about Norfolk now.....only wish we'd grown up there, instead of miserable London!I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

I lived in Norwich (Catton) 35 years ago. I met my wife of nearly 33 years there. We have moved around the UK extensively and I am now retiring. We now live in Scotland where we were happy for many years, but sadly life here is deteriorating fast, courtesy of the SNP government. Anti-English racism is burgeoning, our children have all moved south (revolted by anti-English attitudes), and we intend to move back soon after I retire next month.
I always found Norfolk very welcoming 30+ years ago. Is that still the case? Or will (slightly) wealthy incomers experience problems? Where should we look with a budget of up to around £650k?0 -
I'm moving to south norfolk from east suffolk. The popular east suffolk villages are pricey ie Southwold Walberswick, thorpeness etc. I think because a lot of properties belong to Londoners as second homes.
I'm moving to near Loddon. Don't know much about it but seems very nice with GP dentist vet shops pubs restaurant and a river front. I've been to Acle and that looks nice too.
I wouldn't want to be north of Norwich as I reckon it's colder there!0 -
I'll add myself to the 'live in a village close to Acle' list. Currently looking to buy my first place in this general area (between Thorpe and Acle ideally) and of the numerous properties I've seen so far, the 2 which really appealed sold for over asking before the for sale signs even went up, I guess things are starting to pick up in certain areas.
Is anyone familiar with the East suburbs or Norwich? Thorpe St. Andrew always comes recommended while the Heartsease area next door seems to be a no go, does anyone know what the border of these 2 locations (specifically Plumstead Rd and Woodside Rd) is like?0 -
Don't even think about Heartsease, there are too many other nice places.
The obvious places not to live would be Yarmouth, and Thetford.
Personally I'm not wild about South Norfolk, North is so much prettier or Broadland around Norwich. What about Thorpe riverside end? That's really nice with pubs on the river and villagey feel but spitting distance of Norwich and all the amenities.0 -
Why Norfolk? I would probably go Suffolk or Essex. Your more likely to see house prices rise there as people who can't afford London push out. Norfolk is too far a commuting distance. Look at Sudbury/Ipswich for Suffolk. Or colchester/chelmsford for Essex.
You can get a 3 bed detached new build in Colchester for under 200k at the min.0 -

The riverside area of Thorpe would actually be my preferred location but I've not seen anything within my £150k budget unfortunately. I've been looking at the Acle to Brundall area (where I currently live) as well but again my budget doesn't go very far, Martham might be a good compromise though as it's a really nice village and good value.0 -

I lived on the Heartsease Estate for 32 years. I turned out OK.
I visit my parents there weekly. One red flag with that area is the poor standard of driving on it's roads, be it fully grown adult in cars or youths with death wishes on scooters.
The 1950s-60s homes built by Norwich City Council are spacious and solidly built, there are plenty of amenities in close proximity and a regular bus route.Generation Rent0 -

How about Sprowston (NR7 8)? Good value for money compared to Thorpe St. Andrew. Thorpe End seems very nice too.Generation Rent0
