also cross when the bus has gone so you have a clear vie wof the road0 -
This was clearly 100% the fault of the pedestrian.
Wait....lets ban cars so that stupid people can wander around like iZombies (did you see what I did there???) and not take any responsibility for their own actions.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
A sorry and cautionary story. One life lost, others blighted. My condolences to the relatives and friends of the young man, and sympathies to the driver.
Rule 1. Expect the unexpected.
Rule 2. There is no Rule 3.
Rule 4. Expect the unexpected.
Evidently, there is a mobile phone "app", that uses the camera to allows you to see where you are going on the screen as you text.
But, of course, there are those who would say that, as the young man was killed, the driver must have been going too fast. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

Would it have made a difference? No matter what phone or app you have, if your looking down at a screen, the camera can only show you your head or your feet. Ok for dog poo, useless for anything else.Stephen_Leak wrote: »

She was obviously going too slow. If she'd only been going a bit quicker she would have passed by before the poor chap stepped into the road.0 -

It's not actually. Do you slow down -or drive with extra caution- when you approach an ice cream van stationary at the side of the road? If you don't then you should do. This example is just the same principle. You have a stationary object at the side of the road which is obscuring your view ahead. A responsible driver will note the potential hazard and slow down or if you judge you are going slow enough will drive with extra caution to expect the unexpected.
Children do not only exist at ice cream vans
People with lower mental capacity do not only exist behind ice cream vans
Absent minded people do not only exist behind Ice cream vans.
Dogs do not only exist beside ice cream vans
Infact a stationary bus at a bus stop is a very good indicator that there might be pedestrians in the area.
We don't know how fast the renault Clio was driving, we do know she should have been going about 30 mph as she drove past the bus at the bus stop, she should have given the bus a wide berth without crossing into the outside lane and her attention should have been largely directed to the front end of the bus. If the outside lane was empty she should have changed lanes.0 -

That is a very big and very heavy cricket ball, bowled by a very slow bowler.
The cricket ball weighs five and a half ounces, and slow spin bowlers, and juveniles bowl at 40mph, whereas professional fast bowlers bowl at nearly 100mph.
It pays to get your facts right, before inserting your foot into your mouth.;)0 -

A far better indication of where there may be pedestrians is the 30mph speed limit signs, houses and footpaths. This does not mean that drivers have to drive at 15mph everywhere, because the highway code states that doing so would be "Failure to make due progress".
If someone steps into the road from behind a parked vehicle, then the car driver does not stand a chance of reacting, let alone stopping.0 -

Momentary lapse of concentration. Happens millions of times a day to millions of people all over the world.
Some have tragic endings, most dont.
Lapses in concentration happen, but walking out into the middle of the road without looking is hardly a lapse in concentration.0
