Locally there has been an horrific accident on a 40mph dual carrigeway near my place of work.

A young man got off a bus and whilst texting walked in front of the bus he had just got off. He was hit by a r Clio and suffered 'severe head injuries' acc to the paper - witnesses said you couldn't tell whether the person was m or f and he was dead at the scene.

Please, please, please if you see a bus at a stop then you have got to expect that someone could walk out in front of it so kill your speed and be ready. I am quite guilty of thinking that 'I want to be in front of that bus' , just know what you're doing.

The woman who killed that man ran off traumatised - and she won't be able to get those horrific thoughts out of her head, neither will the lorry driver who was overtaking behind the car or all the passengers on the bus and people passing, the Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade.

Please take care, and be safe.

  • Good advice. Also good advice not to cross roads without looking.

Yes this is true, esp whilst texting or have headphones on, but when you are driving a car you are potentially in charge of a killing machine.

Killing machine!? A teeny little Vauxhall Corsa!?

    Nah.

A killing machine is a tank or something...

So a one tonne hunk of metal travelling at 40MPH isn't a killing machine?

    Why?

What was he driving? Was it KITT off Knight Rider?
Do you remember the green cross code?

    The dead guy didn't.
  • I'm sure I recall learning how to look both ways before crossing a road when I was about...let me see... six years old?!

The whole thing seems like a needless tragedy.

Well for starters it only weighs about three quarters of a ton...

Secondly a killing machine is a machine designed for killing. Like a washing machine is designed for washing or an answering machine is designed to answer phonecalls.

A car is designed for personal transport.

It's a transport machine not a killing machine. The killing is way down the list of intended uses...

Errr it was a Clio not a corsa, largely irrelevant as they both weigh over a tonne, that's about 2200 lb in old money, which is even more irrelevant when you consider that a 1 lb cricket ball travelling at 40mph can kill.

Then you don't get this post at all :(

I think the only lesson to be learned here is:

Do not text/use a mobile phone whilst crossing a road, because you may be responsible for the trauma caused to some innocent driver, and your family when you are killed.

Well I kind of get that, but it's secondary;)

Keep your eyes and ears open when crossing the road if you don't want MSE dissecting your demise is my take on the situation, and yes I do have sympathy, hence my posts.
