My 80 year old mother recently ordered a new Hotpoint appliance from Boots. Having dealt with the details of the purchase, the sales person went on to 'explain' the warranty. It all sounded fine until she suddenly demanded my mothers bank account number and sort code (the purchase was via credit card). Surprised, my mother refused and asked why. Only then was she told that the warranty was no longer free. To the obvious anger of the sales person (they are on commission), she declined.

I wonder why they don't offer the warranty any more?

I wonder if it's because they can't keep up with the demand of the call outs any more.:rotfl:

Finally a sensible post on this thread...if you don't like Hotpoint machines because of reliability etc, fair comment to post your feelings, but posters shouldn't "run off" at the mouth shouting "con" and "rip off" when clearly it's not...if you have a problem or want to vent about something fair enough...but don't shout "con" without substantive proof (none of which has been proved about the 5 yr g'tee)...

and here's the rub about other posters on threads on MSE who claim "con", "rip-off" and use terms like "fraudsters", if you haven't got proof...shut up...if you have, take it to the small claims court, trading standards or even the High Courts...put your money where your mouth is...otherwise you'll just be another whinging ranter ... you need proof ...or stop whinging.

I have given enough proof that the 5 year guarantee clearly is a CON.

It may be legal on the other hand it may not be, perhaps it's never come to court.

I'd suggest that you stop whinging yourself and supply proof that it's not a rip off.

can't help thinking this is Boots own extended warranty same as Currys etc....all of these can be taken regardless of manufacturers warranty...the argument being. "Hotpoint only cover the parts, our warranty covers parts AND labour"...typical sales technique...

Maybe, product quality certainly isn't what it was.

More likely I suspect, is that they want to get rid of the repair side altogether. They want to sell you the stuff and get shot of you.

    1) you haven't proved anything
    2) it is legal
    3) if you think it's not , put your money where your mouth is and take them to court (you'll lose by the way)
    4) as stated before, its been running for over 30 years...if it was a con surely someone public spirited or trading standards or the courts or watchdog would have put a stop to it by now...why haven't they...because it's legal and NOT a con

fair enough if you want to slate the quality of their products, feel free...but don't run off at the mouth shouting "con" as it clearly isn't.

  • I have a washer / dryer and the dryer failed after 3 months, had an engineer out under warranty who advised i take out the extended warranty since they have a lot of problems with the dryers on these. Just 4 days outside the 12 month warranty it breaks again, i phoned Hotpoint who said the original repair is only under warranty for 3 months and i am 4 days outside the 12 month warranty and would have to pay £80 for an engineer.

After pointing out that 12 months is not a reasonable lenth of time for a washer to last and i would take it to the small claims court they still refused to budge and gave me the number for the complaints department.

I phoned them and has a gesture of goodwill they will send an engineer out free of charge since i'm only just over the 12 month warranty by a few days, i will certainly think twice about buying Hotpoint goods in the future though, the washer was £400 so not exacly a cheap one.
