The silly man didnt even notice that it wasnt on. He obviously wasnt that cold!!!

Anyway, my heated airer arrived today. Got a load of washing on it atm.

Also gutted the cupboard under the stairs. 5 bags of junk later i now have ample storage room for my stores.

I actually wrapped Christmas presents tonight

Hi, with regard to your heated airer, I have one of these too and they are great. If you place a duvet cover or sheet over the whole thing once the clothes are on, this traps the heat and the clothes dry quicker. I have also found laying clothes flat and in layers means I can dry more clothes in one go. They do seem to dry more evenly and it saves having to keep shifting them around. I hope this helps :)

What? Do you mean you don't snaffle the bows other people put on presents for you and keep them nice and safe til next time. A loop of sellotape & hey presto... 'posh present':D

We recycle gift bags too! Its not just me, its the whole family!
Mind you, I did think my sister had gone a bit too far when my birthday present came with a father Christmas bag, but she did explain it was the only one she could find that was the right size. :D

I don't get presents :(. I tell a lie - my mum usually gives me something for Christmas.

I don't mind not getting anything - when my DH asks me what I want for Christmas/birthday I always say 'nothing'. Money's tight enough without him wanting to buy stuff I don't need/want with money we don't have.

Just back from Dunelm with some thermal/blackout linings for our small bedroom/pc room. Better than me driving to Asda/buying cheap fleeces and safety pins and cutting to right length.

Curtains are in the wash as well now even though it's chucking down. Seemed stupid not to as I've to take them down to put the linings in them.
  • I bought a couple of those sock slippers from M&S sale at the beginning of summer for 50p pair - ideal to slip on twixt shower and bedroom.
Now it's getting chilly (according to OH - bloody freezing according to me!) in the evenings, they're great for wearing inside your slippers.
When I want to put my feet up on the sofa, I just take off slippers and leave slipper socks on, my poor tootsies stay warm.
Went into M&S today, the exact same ones are £4.00. Explanations on a postcard please.
    Normal people worry me.
  • Hi! I'm new. I've been lurking for awhile but since i've got almost a week off I thought I would join to share what I'm doing for winter prep. However, I have to confess that when its back to work I'll have to be frugal with my time too! My list also includes back-to-term things as well as both me and new hubs teach uni students as well as working on our phds so things get busy.

Here's what I've done so far-

Mostly lined the curtains with fleece blankets from the Swedish superstore. I mis-calculated but the gap is small.
Made sure there is a thick rug under each of the radiators
bought an extra hot water bottle at Wilk*ensens (will look for another later as they only had one)
Got extra toothpaste and mouthwash while getting hot water bottles as it was cheaper than elsewhere
Did a big order from o*cado using new husbands name so we got the new customer discount again
Made a double batch of stew last night and put half into freezer
chopped up all the peppers onions etc. for homemade meatballs to make and freeze tomorrow
Rotated summer clothing out of wardrobe
got a cheap fleece from millets to wear around the house (I'm writing my PhD at home and it gets cold!)
Made a new courderoy cover for the giant cushion I'm stealing from new hubs to keep my feet on
Started making a list of all of our favourite meals so I can cook a few more next week for the freezer and assemble my favourite slow cooker ingredients before teaching starts
    Dug out my boot-slippers
stocked up on candles at swede-mart

    Left to do:
Scrub fridge/freezer before food order arrives next week and before I get too much stored away
    Cook meatballs and freeze
cook 2-3 more meals for freezer
Roast Chicken(got one marked down!) (saturday) and make stock with bones (sunday), possibly make a chicken pie with extra meat to freeze
Finish making list of meals, post on fridge for OH.
Get out wipe off markers and cooking schedule, schedule next week's meals and days for OH to do his (helps us coordinate and use up stuff)
    Order new bus pass
pull lettuce out of pots, water basil (amongst the lettuce) sow more basil for windowsill
make sure all throw blankets are washed
    research flannelette sheets
research small heater for under desk
    consider adding foil behind radiators
go to Aldi to stock up on rice, pasta, foil, tissues etc. that weren't a good deal on supermarket order
go to boots and use points to stock up on cold medicine, ib profen etc.

I'm tired just looking at it...
  • oh, and try to find thermals and fuzzy socks for OH, he always sits in the coldest spot in the flat to read and then turns the heating on before scheduled!
  • Hi all, have been away for a week and just catching up. Seems everyone is doing well! I have just about got all my prep done, just need to do a car box, and sort out garden shed. I need some room to store some salt and my new shovel in.

Only thing left to buy are some thermal socks, I have looked in all the shops, M & S, primani, BHS, tesco, asda, next etc, and cant find any anywhere. Any ideas?? I did think about trying a camping/outdoor type shop.

    katie:)

  • Bought a £9 Asda Smartprice king sized quilt to use a a giant throw for my leather sofa.

I hate leather sofas in winter, they are so cold.
  • Katie,

When I was in Millets getting my super-reduced fleece I asked about thermals and the shop owner said they had just come in (yesterday) they didn't have many yet but he said things like that would be on the way in the next week or so, so perhaps things will start to show up? I'm also on the hunt for thermal socks!
