Excellent prices I think!0 -
Oh goodness please let's not get in that break-down-of-society mode ,
BUT I must tell you about my mother . who was a hoarder and a 'hider' rolled into one. After my dad died, she revealed that she was keeping a store of cash under the fitted carpet (one area not tacked down for ease of note laying down!). My sister and I duly took up part of said carpet only to find majority of notes had ceased to be legal tender some years previously -lol!!!! Had to take all to bank and explain - leaving out exact whereabouts of cash hoard, and get them changed. Just dont get caught out by any changes in design etc......
oh no worries tugrin, the money in the house eases my mind so i DON'T go into end of the world mode. right now my isa is with ING direct, if i was really panicked i would withdraw it an put it in another bank as it's not covered by british law, it's in that eu optional thingy (can't remember the name) i'm not really worried that the dutch gov't wouldn't pay out so i'm leaving it there, it has a good rate of interest and their service thus far has been exceptional.
my real concern would be other people panicking here and withdrawing funds all at once, then i wouldn't have money to buy things needed imminently... to be honest if the world did fall apart money wouldn't be worth anything at all
sorry if i sounded doom and gloom on ya, i got a mind that worries about things like this, just niggles as i've been on the edge of homelessness a few times and just plain stopped growing for 2 prime growing up years due to lack of proper nutrition as a kid... not paranoid, just remembering!0 -
Red Doe I used bits of old packing for one of my windows and our local garden centre sell bubble wrap by the metre for insulating greenhouses, that way you can buy big bits and what you need to fit your window, it might be cheaper in the long run, my windows are 6'x4'Sue
Do I need to eat it
Can I afford the calories:eek:
have I checked for a lower calorie version:T0 -
Ditto water purifying tablets...last summer, we lost our water supply over a space of three weeks! I was reduced to hauling water indoors from the local burn. You can bet your !!! I purified it!
the year we moved to glasgow we could have done with water purification tablets, i can't remember the name of the disease but the stuff that gets in the water when sheeps poo contaminates it happened to the glasgow water supply, we had to boil our water for a full week, and my daughter was just a baby at the time, i'd have been glad for them then!0 -
Currently simmering the old rosehips and wondering about how you turn the slightly bigger ones into tomato substitutes??? Obviously the seeds and fluff have to go ??? Whats the easiest way of doing this?
i do the unheard of, i squeeze mine  mind you i lightly squeeze mine through a double layer of daughters old tights over a sieve so i'm fairly sure i'm not getting anything nasty but i do get a slightly thicker lot of juice out of it.
i've done this a few times with no issues, just don't sqeeze hard and you should be just fine. you'll need to cook the rosehip sauce down considerably if you want it thick, or add some tomato puree to help boost it a bit.0 -
I've only ever made the syrup, so not sure about the tom substitute, but with the syrup I boil up the hips then strain them so the fluff n stuff gets left behind.
I'd imagine with keeping the hips for anything, you'd have to halve them and deseed by hand! Lot of work, unless anyone knows another way.
if you wanted to dry them then yes you'd have to remove the seeds, though personally, i wouldn't trust that all the hairs would be removed doing that
for anything else, top and tail them, boil and strain through multiple layers of muslin or fine cotton over a sieve (i use my daughters opaque tights doubled) no need to deseed at all! that's what the straining does for you0 -

I remember when I purchased a very vintage circular dial telephonefrom the auctions, gold and green marble with the receiver that sits on it's own goldey cradle and has these big bulbous ear and mouth parts, the kids thought it was really hysterical and couldnt figure out how to dial a number, they kept sticking their finger in and trying to press the number instead of keeping finger in a hole and turning hahahah!!! times change quick don't they.
i remember those, my grandmother had one (not quite that vintage but the bakerlight kind mounted to the wall) it was horrid, if you finger slipped or you lost count, any slight distraction you had to start all over again and it always seemed every number i had to dial had loads of 9's in it :rotfl:
she had that phone, hmmm well into the 80's :eek:0 -
I just have to say bravobeastie that I love your avatar. You have very good taste!0

I love that stuff, I buy big jars in boots when its on 342, and have to ration myself to 1 big spoon a day sometimes. Had it since I was a toddler back in the 60's.
These days I know if I haven't taken enough as my knee joint starts hurting, take it 2 days running and the pains gone again.:)
i take cod liver oil for my knees as well and you're quite right, 2 days off and boy do i feel it, 2 days on it again and it feels so much less painful!
as for vitamins for the kiddies the rosehip syrup should suffice but if you want an extra booster you can give them chewable vitamin c. my daughter and i have been on vitamin c since my bout with swine flu just shy of 2 years ago, we have just now gotten a cold. it's one that would have been a full on nasty, knock you on your posterior types but we're flying through it so it's only about 1/3rd the strength it would have been... in away i'm thankful, shows me the vitamin C DOES work and now i've built up just that bit more natural immunity before the cold season comes on full blast... we'll be taking rosehip syrup this year ourselves and just taking one vitamin c a day methinks, rosehips a plenty around here, cheaper than vitamin c tablets0
