Preparing for winter II

Good evening! We rent a flat with wooden blinds, and had planned to put up curtains for the winter. However, our landlord has refused us permission, even when we promised to take them down and make good any holes for the curtain pole at the end! Any ideas for a non-permanent way to put up curtains or similar to keep us snug this winter? Very gratefully received!September Grocery Challenge £236.28/£2600

I love that stuff, I buy big jars in boots when its on 342, and have to ration myself to 1 big spoon a day sometimes. Had it since I was a toddler back in the 60's.
These days I know if I haven't taken enough as my knee joint starts hurting, take it 2 days running and the pains gone again.:)
we were all lined up, the whole 5 of us, in the kitchen every morning and given a tablespoon full then a haliborange and i cant remember any of us ever being off school and that was having to walk about two miles in rain, sleet or snow, wrapped up in a duffle coat with gloves dangling on a string and a pair of derry boots!!!!!(yes it was the 70's) and in those days the girls were not allowed to wear trousers, think we were hardier then tho' i think the best thing is to let kids out to play no matter the weather and let them get mucky, DS now 13 used to be out all the time absolutely filthy apart from one clean thumb where he had sooked the dirt off it or if it was too dirty he would wash his hands in a puddle! sounds awful but he never has a cold and never has any sickness bugs!skintbint x

Anyone know where I might get one similar? I've tried everywhere I can think o
I went out to the second hand vintage place yesterday and found an old fashioned bed/hotwater bottle made out of ceramic.... the kids were totally astounded, put it on the floor last night in living room and we all kept warming our feet on it lol!
A very aged but wise chap I knew used one he had bought from new in 190plonk. He used to use the warm water in it, kept cozy all night in his bed to have a wash with in the morning !0 -

When we lived in a flat and our landlord wouldn't let us put up curtains/curtain poles, we attached blankets to the blinds instead to help keep the heat in/cold out. Can't remember exactly how we did it, but think it was my OH being rather creative with some string and the way the blinds were constructed!

I think my cat has started hibernating !!! Under the duvet 24/7 apart from a snack and spending a penny!!!
Soon as I check up on meow, just goes deeper under!!!
Weird how suddenly dives under there this time of year??
Has your cat started hibernating???0 -

No, I like that part of the family. I guess I shall just see how things go and see what I can find in the next few weeks. This week it will be a bit odd as we're both telling our parents, so a little strange.
Winter wise, my Mum is giving me her old slow cooker (it's huge) so that'll come in useful. She's also sorting through some bedding and is giving me a few bits (my parents are retiring and moving somewhere smaller, so getting rid of lots of stuff).
Hon, I'm sure there are a few of us as well as myself that can identify with the awkwardness of telling others about splitting up, hope it goes as well as it can for you. Take good care of yourself.0 -

I used an ikea shower curtain pole in the recess of the frame, then hung an ikea fleece blanket on it using spare shower curtain rings (fleece already has holes in it- how handy!). The fleece can easily be cut to size as it won't fray.
You could buy tab top or ring curtains instead of using a fleece blanket, but I'd imagine they'd need to be fairly lightweight to stop the pole from falling down.0 -
My 2 pairs of wincyette (brushed cotton to the under 30's
) jimmies arrived today, chose a size bigger than I am so there's plenty of room if I want to wear a thermal underneath and the extra leg/sleeve length will keep me warm. Also got three pairs of 2.3 tog sox, and am waiting on a chunky cable knit ski hat - very becoming
. But I'm determined not to freeze this year!
For the posters who mentioned keeping cash in the house, can I suggest not keeping it all in one place but split it up into smaller amounts. It won't be the end of the world if you lose a few £'s but to lose the lot would be devastating. Places opportunist burglars will look are kitchen containers, behind pictures on the wall, taped under drawers, under potted plants, in the fridge or freezer and in clothes pockets in the wardrobe. Sorry if I've just unveiled your hiding place and you have to find somewhere else! There are other places they'll try of course, you have to be very inventive0
