Preparing for winter II

just got back from shopping and bought 3 fleeces in Asda for £1.50 in sale (each) and got the fleece lined bed sheets for ours and the boys beds. I'm sure i have loads more to do, not sure what else.
I am going to my ready made liners for bedroom curtains. They are from floor to ceiling so a fleece won't fit and I can't sew very well, I've been putting it off. But I will take the plunge this year and get them as our room is always cold and dampI have dyslexia, so get used to my spelling and grammarMortgage pay off date 11/2028. Target 12/2020 :rotfl:

Yes - I stand corrected - you are right Red Doe et al - its wise to keep some dosh about the place. (But I did scare myself witless on that other thread-sorry).
Can someone point by way of a link how to get the really cheapy fleeces from Asda? I feel like a complete eejit when I have been on the website.
Currently simmering the old rosehips and wondering about how you turn the slightly bigger ones into tomato substitutes??? Obviously the seeds and fluff have to go ??? Whats the easiest way of doing this?

its seriously chilly here this evening, im contemplating getting the flannel bedding on next time i change the bed linen.
i have refrained from putting the heating on though, instead i put the hot water on so i can have a nice bath and also the bathroom radiator comes on when the hot water is on so i can have nice toasty towels as well.0 -
I went out to the second hand vintage place yesterday and found an old fashioned bed/hotwater bottle made out of ceramic.... the kids were totally astounded, put it on the floor last night in living room and we all kept warming our feet on it lol![/QUOTE]
We have 4 old pot hot water bottles, used to be OH grandparents, many a time we have used them, our children find it funny when they see them in museumsFashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

hiya just thinking about the snow last year. were we are its a mile walk to school so manovering pushchair is hard work in snow at least if we can get to end of road it means we can get the bus. Any ideas on how to make getting two children to school in snow up hill for one mile complete with baby in tow? Is there anything i can put on pushchair wheels that wont wreck em or the bus? thanks
I'm sure I read a few pages back about putting cable ties around the wheels. The original idea was on a bike with one between each spoke, and the "knot" just at the side of the tyre on the outside with the spare bit cut off. I seem to recall someone with a pushchair was going to try this too. Cheap and cheerful, and you can always cut them off if they don't work too well.
(Hope that description is legible, but I can't think how else to tell you)0 -
its not just the getting the oil delivered thats the problem - if there is a bad snap everyone will want oil quickly and the suppliers wont have enough - if the roads are bad then they wont get deliveries either - thats what happened last winter where my brother is - he usually topped up his tank in Nov to see them through the winter but because of the snow and ice then his supplier was short- he tried loads of suppliers in a 100 mile radius with no luck - by the time his supplier had oil they couldnt get a lorry to my brothers - they were 6 weeks without central heating or hot water - through the worst of the winter - it was very miserable for them so they have got organised with an extra tank for this year.
so what i am really trying to say (I think!!) is dont leave it too late getting things like oil as we may get a cold spell earlier that expected.
thanks for the mention of keeping cash in the house -although I am in a town I cant get out on my wheelchair if the weather is bad so will need to make sure i have enough cash to cover the cleaner, windows, any food shopping anyone else does, taxis etc - I wouldnt have thought about it until too late - thanks everyone!
have moved my table and chairs into the garage as I cant see me using it again - its easy enough to get at if the weather was good but its in and clean and dry for now.

I am making progress on my list of things to do and get this year. I got 2 1l flasks last week in the end of season camping sale in the outdoor shop near work (it's not usually open when I pass), and I cleaned out the gutters over the weekend too (I'd asked the builders to do that last autumn when they were up there anyway, but I have to trust they did the main roof but they certainly didn't do the small roof over the piece that sticks out over the sittingroom/front porch).
I am looking around for a snow shovel, and we have to find a new supplier for snow socks for my car - the one where DH got his have gone out of business. He wants to get a set of winter tyres for his front wheels in a couple of weeks time - he needs 4 new ones anyway, and will get the 2 front ones with the good grip.
We are doing the big winter "stores" shop this week and I intend making sure that I have plenty of things like a packet of dried milk, and evaporated milk, instant smash, and a few more of the things my gran used to keep, just in case the weather is rotten for a few weeks. Not so much that we won't be able to get to the shops, but there was so little there last year - and it was a pain to get there besides.
And I want to get the coal bunker filled in about 3-4 weeks time as well. So that all the time we save on not needing to go out can be nice and cosy here instead. I even have a fresh pack of cards as our regular pack is starting to get a big worse for wear (generally holidays and bad weather use, but DD is playing them a lot recently too, so better to have a spare, in case).GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

Might give this a try - I have quite a big one similar to this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8500447/Trail/searchtext%3EMINKY+AIRER.htm but find the clothes overlap/take ages to dry if I use every railGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
