Preparing for winter II

Kazla - please be careful with the echinacea if you are still breast feeding as there is a belief that they can cause liver damage - my couins daughter ended up having to have tests and the consultant commented he had been seeing more and more people due to what they believed was the increased use of echinaceaWhat Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

Wouldn't these be absolutely horrid if you had to go to the loo in the night, having to strip your top off to get the bottoms down...? Makes me shiver just thinking about it!

The only reason i can think for keeping a few hundred quid about the place in winter is paying for the heating!! Seriously if the weather is so bad that banks can't fill their machines their ain't goin to be much in the shops to buy nor any chance of getting there to spend it. Lets keep this thread less end of the world and a bit more warm and fluffy!
It's a bit unfair to treat those of us who advocate things like that as all a bunch of end of the world scenarioists.
what about those of us who live in remote areas? Last couple of winters, the banks couldn't even get here due to the snow and ice on the roads (mobile banks here, obviously) but the local wee shop did still have stock in. They also prefer cash. So it makes sense to keep cash in the house.
Ditto water purifying tablets...last summer, we lost our water supply over a space of three weeks! I was reduced to hauling water indoors from the local burn. You can bet your !!! I purified it!
Please don't go from one extreme to the other here. There's room in this thread for all sorts of folks, and it doesn't take the end of the world to come, for some of us to actually need some of the things survivalists do suggest keeping."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -

Anyone know where I might get one similar? I've tried everywhere I can think o
I went out to the second hand vintage place yesterday and found an old fashioned bed/hotwater bottle made out of ceramic.... the kids were totally astounded, put it on the floor last night in living room and we all kept warming our feet on it lol!Thriftkitten

littlecal - re your hooks, you need surgical spirit, it's a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and something else and will give you the ultra clean, no residue finish the hooks need.
Re: Echinacea - I think this is a personal thing, ie some people find it helpful and some don't. I'm quite sceptical about herbal remedies but echinacea definitely works for me, to the extent that if I'm not taking it (best not to take it permanently) and get the first signs of a cold, then I start taking it and either don't develop the cold or get a "cold in 24 hours" thing where I get all the yucky symptoms but it's all over by the next day. Brilliant stuff if you are someone who responds to it.
Spent the weekend putting up curtain poles and lining, ironing and hanging winterised curtains - in one of the hottest weekends of the year :rotfl::rotfl: All the big jobs are now done but lots of little ones, like a catch for the door to the stairs and a dozen similar things still to do. I've given myself a deadline of the end of this month to get everything done so best get cracking!"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -

Still working on my winter prep and finally caught back up with this thread! This week I'm waiting on my Ikea delivery for fleeces and also a big rug for the cold kitchen floor. Even with the delivery charge it worked out cheaper than getting them from elsewhere.
Stick on Velcro question... where did you buy it from and how much did it cost? Would it attach to the metal frame for my blinds? I'm wondering if it'd be better to stick the fleeces to that rather than attach them to the actual curtains.0 -
Well its was so cold this morning in the wind & rain & had to put my gloves on(allbeit I was standing on the side of a hill!) so I've started to line the curtains in DS's room. it can get a bit chilly int he winter but its such a small room with a radiator & carpet!
But I've run out of safety pins so waiting for DH to get in so I can run to the corner shop to get more supplies!!!
Please tell me I WILL notice a difference?!?!?!?0 -

This is exactly why I would keep cash in the house - I can walk to the village shop, but the nearest cash machines are 8 miles away by car! If the weather was bad, I might want to buy things from the shop, if they had them in, and I wouldn't want to have to go out of the village to get the cash to buy them with!! I probably would only be looking at keeping about £50 about me though - I usually have only a couple of quid in my purse in cash, so it would be something I would have to make an effort to do.December GC: £3500 -

Mr T's had some in today, lovely and soft and with a lovely wide satin belt for £12.50, thought of you today when I saw them.0
