Preparing for winter II

Hey Annie that looks fabulous and so cheap too - doesnt say how you fix it up altho' the unbelievably cheery lady in the add looks as if she is just pressing it against the window frame and waiting for the magic to happen!! This will be on my list for the warm weather. However I cannot stress enough that I really do not want the window open, even just a crack, all night. Its not good for my asthma and we are in a frost pocket. I think I will have to go for a window quilt to up the insulation and may be leave the door open a wee bit.
you can put a wee bowl of salt in the window too, it'll soak up the condensation for you. i have double glazing but the one in my bedroom sweats in winter too so i'm going to use the salt this year to resolve it. mine even has it's on ventilation in the form of warped wooden frames and it STILL sweats so salt is my real option, i don't need a dehumidifier as it's only my room that does it0 -
Hi Tugrin, I don't have that dehumidifier anymore but it was a fairly cheap Hinari one
Worked a treat, our old house was so damp, depressingly so. I'd run the dehumidifier in the bedroom for a couple of hours before bedtime and the water-tub would be full up! Maybe you could get one cheap second hand?
It's full blown midge season here at the moment, you daren't go outdoors unless you're wearing a midge net hood or you get eaten alive. This is because it's been rainy and they love the damp! And it's getting quite cold and chilly at nights now.
I LOVE tablet!Well done for winning. Every time I've tried to make tablet, it's ended up all crunchy for some reason, not the smooth creamy stuff I like. If you're planning on making rosehip wine, I'd think you've a fair chance of winning with that, never made it myself but tasted it and it's lovely.

we produce a lot of condensation from our breathing - a total of 1/2 pints per person per day according to various la's - so bedroom air needs to be changed/refreshed daily.
I'm in a ground floor flat and very deaf so rarely open the big windows but I have all the small top windows open for at least a couple of hours a day, that lets fresh air circulate all through the flat. I also leave the vents open in the top of the dg unit.
for the last couple of years I've used window screens like the ones Annie linked to, they've worked well to stop wasps, flies and crawlies getting in... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi everybody I've been reading this site for years but have never posted so here goes!! First a HUGE thank you to everybody for all your tips on keeping warm and cosy, our house is an old stone cottage and it was freezing until last winter when I started using all your ideas!
Our windows are double glazed but I still apply the insulating film onto most of them. It's almost completely stopped the condensation in the bedroom (I always leave our door open a little bit too) and the bathroom and kitchen windows are almost condensation free too. I do each section of the window individually so I can still open the windows.
We live on a back road to nowhere and the snow last year was really bad so I'm getting all my winter prep done early! We almost ran out of oil because the lorry could not get to us so I've had the tank filled already. Hope the sun is shining with everybody today.0 -
I did some winter prep today
I went into A*da this morning straight from the school run and decided to have a nose at their fleeces. Well I just happened to be walking past their clearance bit and there were 5 fleeces reduced to clear to £1.30 each
:money: The 3 brown ones will go with the other brown ones I already have to line curtains and the 2 red ones will be used as fleeces as I'm using red as my accent colour in my livingroom which I'm slowly doing up
I'm getting there slowly
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Well hello tootsieann welcome from beneathe your invisibility cloak and thank you for advice re film insulation over the d/glazing - you indof believe because you have those magic words "double-glazing" all your problem sould be over in that department but how incredibly naive of one (ie me)!
Salt on the window sill - bubblewrap for privacy AND insulation a bit of ventilation during the day and I hope I will have knocked it on the head thanks to you people!
Just discovered I cant get the old rather smelly duvet from our summerhouse-!!!-shed into the washing machine - Im not going to chuch it and buy new or waste the petrol money driving it 14 miles each way to launderette - im going to cut it dowm the centre, hem it, wash both halves then either add velcro to fitback together of re-sew. I only want it to pad the sofa in te newly winter-proofed sitting room.
Interestingly on te condensation front ,DD's windows with fleece curtain linings ad NO condensation his am!debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
well thats the tatties lifted and in cardboard boxes for the winter, beetroot lifted but still to be made into chutney, parsley dried and in jars, need to get the rhubard pulled and made into jam or frozen. really beginning to feel inadequate as have no stock of loo roll!!!!!!!! but will get that seen to this week, i buy the tesco stuff at £1.99 for 9 rolls - quilted and doesnt disintegrate! busy week ahead so wont get much else done this week.
Hi all, i do read this thread, but don't believe i have ever posted. Just had to ask wot quilted toilet tissue you get, as I will defo stock up on that for £1.99 x 9 rolls, but alas me thinks maybe its not that price. Gets ready to sprint out of door in case it is.0 -
Good Morning
It was down to 10 degrees outside last night and horro of horros there was condensation on my bedroom windo this morning! Now I do realise that this is a daily occurence for many of us and indeed I have lived in many a house that needed towels on the window ledges and regular wiping down - but what Im worried about here is that Im supposed to have these all-singing-and-dancing double glazed windows and they didnt do this last year Is it the brand spanking new loft insulation wich has very definitely lifted the upstairs temperature? Have the seals gone? I havent done the bubble-wrap tango yet - will this help? HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Apart from that emergency - hope everyone has a really positive start to the week - well done us for prepping as the weather forecast is not nice
Rather than opening the windows at night, can you open them a tiny bit once the day warms up a bit. And open a window on the other side of the house to get a through draught?
I tend to need to do this once a week at least just to reduce the condensation on the windows in winter. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
This morning I rubbed down my garden furniture and re teak-oiled it. It looks like it could take another layer before I put it to bed for the winter. I hope the covers I bought this year last-the ones from last year literally disintegrated by spring, it was bizarre!
I have just got out my sewing machine to see if it still works, so I can sort my curtains out. I am still waiting for my ex to put the rail up for me, and am wondering whether it matters as he could put the rail up to suit the length I end up with? Anyway I am trying to work out where locally I can get some thread to match the curtains. We have no haberdashers now locally-I am wondering if Dunhelm do thread, as that's not too big a drive?Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0 -
theres an article in todays paper that energy bills will rise by £300 because of "greening". The worlds stock markets apear to be in freefall. here comes a great depression? I think its going to be a rough ride. I'm glad i have my fleeces and hats and scarves, and stockpiled food. at least I should be warmish.0
