butterfyl - if you are near a waitrose they have some lovely cashmere socks which I use as an undersock then put on an ordinary wool boot sock. I really beleive that wool i best as its natural and doesnt lose heat when its damp (I can have 'glowing' feet - as I'm a lady !) Having cold feet as a child reains with me to this day (on the would you rather ea or stay warm this year board I chose keep warm) Im convinced that my sisters and I suffered in our vile damp uunderheated flat because we were the generation who had mothers that thought nylon was BRILLIANT. Oh god cold sweaty feet in plastic shoes- NEVER AGAINdebt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0

Just had an idea... for my outside pipe that freezes in VERY cold weather... Would windscreen de-icer spray work on it if I got to it early enough... or if I sprayed it each evening/morning?
Not sure if that is a mad idea or if it could actually work?
Any ideas anyone?
I shouldn't have thought so. It's the water in the pipe that freezes rather than the pipe itself. De-icer type products work by mixing with the water and changing its chemical composition in order to lower the freezing temperature. So usless you actually put anti-freeze stuff in the water (which you won't want to do!), it won't do anything.0 -
Best thing for outside pipe is the tube insulation with a slit along it, then just pop it on the pipe and hey presto! My dad also swers by wrapping old carpet etc round then. We need to sort out the pipe to our washing machine in the garage, froze nearly every time last winter grrr!Debt at LBM - £11,505Debt 2011 = [STRIKE]8K[/STRIKE] £7760 - DF in July 2013DMP Paddle no. 1 Sealed Pot No. 1375Grocery Challenge Aug £418.31/£450 Sept £ /£4500

I tried allsorts last year and the damn thing still froze... leaving me without a washing machine for 5 days
Might try the tube insulation and then pack it with more stuff and box it in with something....0 -

Hmm...brain starts working....I wonder if it would work if you put zip ties on your shoes. I shall have to experiment.0 -

Afternoon all!
After being a long time lurker on this thread (and reading avidly!) I have to say thanks to you all for helping to get me motivated! The weather has been so cold in the mornings of late, and I can see the time approaching when I'm going to have to deice the car in the mornings!
Pigpen - just a quick Q; you mentioned draught excluder tape in your list, I just wondered where is the best place to buy it? I know its £5.89 on amazon, is this a good price (its for 10m of it)
So far I've...- Stockpiled de-icer for the car (it was going cheap at morrisons...8p a can!!!)
- Building up a store cupboard...slowly but surely. at the moment its mainly soup!
- Dig out and wash all jumpers/hats/gloves/scarves for myself and OH
- Buy OH some new thermal gloves
- Buy OH a waterproof jacket!
- Get draught excluders/ excluder tape!
any advice would be appreciated as I dont really know where to start!:o xxxxEvery act of kindness, no matter how small, isn’t wasted ❤️

I live in a built up area too with a co op within easy walking distance... but... if the weather gets really bad then the local shops sell out of bread, milk, essentials really quickly.
Because I don't like going out in my car when its icy/snowy then I make sure I have at least 2 weeks worth of meals sorted and plenty of milk frozen... we do have a local milkman (www.milkandmore.co.uk) so its worth signing up to them so you don't have to go out for basics - the milkman delivers allsorts these days.
Remember to keep snacks and warm stuff in the car too
Hope that helps0 -
I've done a stash inventory. not as much needed to buy as I thought so thats good.0

I've found on another forum that someone had put a post about knitting stuff for winter. It's patterns from 2009 but it's only like 7p to download
http://www.interweavestore.com/Knitting/Magazines/Interweave-Knits-Accessories-2009-Download.html?SessionThemeID=15
and you can see the accessories from there on here
