Nutty & Pigpen my french doors are the same:( they look lovely but would now never choose another house with them! A total nightmare in the spring/autumn as there's not a window in the room and have to have the door open partially, an even worse nightmare in the summer as it gets sooooo hot, and just awful in the winter with the drafts! :rotfl:(either that, or cry)!
Mine are in a room with no other window too.. and if you open them the room fills with flies and it is a horrid dark gloomy room and always freezing!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Thanks!Just ordered mine today! I always end up in jeans which when you fall over in the snow get horribly heavy!!!
Just keep swimming0 -
We had hailstones here earlier too, and thunder. The chickens weren't sure what to make of the thunder!0

Im around that size as well, and ive got a couple of imitation pashmina's and they are long enough to wrap round my body a couple of times, i just fold it in half lenghtways a few times and then wrap and safety pin it in place if out and about or if just round the house i just tie the ends together.0 -
Hi ,Sorry if this has already been mentioned but Matalan had snoods in grey and black today at £6 each. Remember last winter when it was so cold and we were scouring the shops for them? I've got mine...
(in fact I'm wearing it now and can recommend them for inhouse use!:)) It's surprising how much warmer you get by covering your neck!
Thanks to everyone who contributes, I have trouble keeping up with you all these days!:TThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Evening preppers
It's been a lovely sunny evening here in Aberdeen and what have I been doing? Prepping for a harsh winter!
Been to B&Q tonight:
3 bags of Rock salt - £6.98 each
3 Bench Covers - £2.00 each
1 Fire Pit - Reduced to £40 from £79
Still can't find any blooming de-icer :mad:As my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'0 -
The winter lined trousers have been delivered. They don't flatter (well not me anyway) but they are the cosiest trousers I've ever seen. Don't know about dog walking, I may be living in these in the house because the heating won't be on much.
Highly recommended, and thanks for the tip off.

:T ooo i like that fleece! I am wondering if come up small or not,,,think will order biggest one so plenty of room for layers thankyou!!!
How rude of me I didnt even start with a hello, ,its prob because I love reading this thread and am already familiar with u all and your winter prepso HELLO all
I have made a start and bought some snow boots from fleabay £5 and a new winter coat which has a tag of £175 on it! I got it for £10 delivered. The snow boots have snow written on them but as DH pointed out there is an inner plastic bag between the outer boot and soft inner so my snow boots may be cheap rubbish after all,,oh well they were on the thread so obviously I needed them :rotfl:
OH is not helpful in my planning,,it is very frustrating! He said I am 'crazy' buying winter stuff,, pah who listens to him anyway?? He will soon change his mind when we have food, heat and warmth and he has new gloves and hat (not decided whether to give them to him yet!)
He wont let me order a snow shovel as we have a spade, nor a coal bunker lol spoilsport!
I do want to order coal as buying a bag a week isnt cost effective but not sure where to keep it if i get it from coalman. I could just order bags I think and keep them covered up,,any ideas?
I have plenty of logs and they are chopped, seasoned and covered ready. Our open fire is lovely I love it but last yr couldnt light it much cos the chimney leaked and everytime we had a fire smoke came into the bathroom!! anyhow oh sorted the chimney, roof and bathroom so I am so looking forward to the fire this year.
Got new hats gloves, scarves and hot water bottles for all 5 of us. Making draught excluders from remnant, made 12 pots various jams from foraged and fruit given to me so far. 3 large jars chutney and 2 beetroot. cupboards and my new outdoor freezer bursting with food!
Just had new kitchen so sealed up 2 large gaping holes behind old cupboards!! already feel the difference, had new slate floor and its lovely and warm on the feet compared to our old quarry tiles which are still underneath so hoping that prevents some cold too.
I have a list and am slowly ticking off jobs/stuff,,need to stock up on bunny straw food etc and am making them an insulated hutch cover out of thick waterproof tarpaulin lined with those silver insulated sheet thingys (I think!!) OH has offered to put the massive hutch on some slabs soon ;-) If its really cold my dwarf buns will be coming into the house overnight using the plastic indoor hutch hahaha I can see OH's face now!!
Have also made use of a week off to bake and cook a few meals for freezer,,just thought be nice in coming weeks to have a prepared crumble, cake, scone, spag bol, chilli I am going to try to keep 'something' ready in freezer both sweet and savoury.
The idea of freezing chopped onion & peppers is brill thanks to those who gave that tip.
I LOVE preparing for winter and love this thread,,its my favourite thread to read with a cuppa once kids in bed!!,,thankyou all for all the tips and ideas.
I am finding it hard to convince myself I dont need yaktrax,, damn OH and his comment of 'crikey u lived 40 odd years without them!!
Happy Planning allLife happens when you are busy making other plans

Thank you for the link to the craghoppers website, I've just ordered some. I usually wear my regular trousers with my waterproofs over the top to keep warm but find it really bulky, these will be much better on cold days.
Not so much winter preparation as getting organised today, went shopping and bought some frozen stuff for the defrosted freezer, still lots to get. I also bought a few items that were on bogof or offer to keep my stocks up (ie one in use and one for when it runs out) We are going to my sisters at the weekend and they have loads of blackberries nearby so going to pick some and freeze for apple and blackberry crumbles in the winter months.
Have a lovely evening.
