Could I just ask please are flannelette the same as brushed cotton?
TIA
Pollys x
Polly they are one of the same, they are just purely a play on words. Flannelette is uber old fashioned and linked with the stripey flannelette sheets of years gone by from the 1960's and 70's. To bring them up to date and give them a bit more curb appeal the stores/manufacturers call them brushed cotton, which in effect is actually what they are.
The process involves thousands of tiny brush like needles which work over the surface of the sheet to cause the cotton to fluff up under the brushing process.
I got mine yesterday from John Lewis and their website is still showing them as flannelette. It depends who you buy them from and how they market them as to what terminology they use.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

Costco has 2 pairs of the grip things for shoes for a very reasonable price (think it was about £14) not sure if they are exactly the ones you;re looking for but might be of use to someone

I went to C0stc0 last Saturday and they have snow grippers for boots, gloves etc so would say they are getting their winter stock in now.I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
I've gone into knitting mode as the mornings are so cold already and the forecast is scarey LOL. Agree with Red Doe about cold - its healthy and good to keep bedroom windows open but if it's very very cold, like minus minus, then its mad. Also in damp or fog all it will do is give you bronchitis. When we moved up here it was baltic in winter, there was no heating in any of the rooms apart from the coal fire in the livingroom... and my son ended up in hospital on oxygen with his asthma. That's when I stopped leaving windows open.0

Tesco Direct (new catalogue) are selling fold-up snow shovels (steel) for £15, not sure how this price compares with other sellers.

ps Thanks for the replies re flannelette being the same as brushed cotton. I was hoping it was the same thing. I have one of those candy-striped pillowcases from the 60/70's it is lovely and soft even now, no idea where my mum got it from though!MFW 1/5/08 £45,789 Cleared mortgage 1/02/13

Oh lordie...I'd forgotten about all this stuff. It's only August! But then again I distinctly remember being almost snowed in for two weeks last year. With a freezer full of food, a huge larder and all the stored produce from the allotment we did not so bad but we did run out of a few things and DS and I ended walking down to the shops with the sledge.
So my list:
UHT milk
Cat litter!
Toilet rolls.
Bread flour and yeast.
Instant hot chocolate.
I also need a new snow shovel, de-icer spray and salt.
Incidentally Tesco reduces all it's gardening stuff around this time of year and I've seen the Value garden spades going for £2-£3. Ideal to keep in the boot of the car for digging-out emergencies. I also keep a couple of old rag rugs in there for putting under the wheels of the car on icy mornings. These were so effective that the neighbours kept popping round to borrow them. They usually cost a pound or two in Ikea or the £££ shops and it doesn't matter if they're ugly.Val.0 -

ahh thank you that's a great idea, i know i've got at least one in the house. thought also occured to me that i have an extra pair of thermal fleece boot liners that i could stuff inside whatever i use to cover both sides of my lower back. it's normally only my left side but if the left has spasmed badly enough then the other side starts going too.
the fleece i thought would be like my own self heating pad because it would store my own body heat just like a duvet does. combine these two and i have a no sew option! thanks to everyone that has responded about this, i'll def rig something up now as i just can't face another winter like that.0 -
Cardboard also works for putting under car wheels, I've still got some in my car boot from last year:o or rather earlier this year.

Not very MSE all this shopping:rotfl:Just ordered 2 pairs of the craghoppers for dog walking over the winter.
ahh but you're wrong, it IS MSE if you then don't spend a fortune on heating your home or being ill and unable to work because you were underdressed for the weather!
i look at prep as an investment. it may not have an immediate return but in the end you know that even if you only break even the hours you had that were more productive because you were warmer, healthier and happier then translate into savings of a sort that can't always be measured in £'s (though often they really can!)
