Preparing for winter II

Ah, my garage is just the same! It is going to be turning into a massive wood store this year. My wood man has put his prices up by half as he said the forestry commission have put theirs up so wood is more expensive. Now I can understand that for next year (i.e. next season) but not this. I have been ringing round but am going to drive over to Longleat and have a look at their wood as that is by the tonne rather than cubic metres. If it is dry, it will be light and therefore I will get more so we shall see.
I buy bags of coal and they are stacked in the garage too.0 -
My seasoned hardwood logs are quiet heavy but they last on the fire. I shall prune some of the fruit trees and leave that outside to season for at least 6 months. I have some pallets as well but find that wood only good for starting a fire, If you can find a local coal merchant it would probably be cheaper than bags, I use house trebles to calm the wood down,C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z Able Archer0

I went to high school in Dalkeith
FIL's ashes were scattered on the centrespot of Dalkieth Football Grounds pitch; we got a special dispensation to from the club to do this.
You may know some of DH's cousins as there is still family up there who have never moved from the village/town.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
Just a quick heads up - popped to Sainsburys today to use a till spit and they've reduced their cosies to up to 70% off. Got a pack of two long sleeve thermal tops for £2.70 and a new fleecy dressing gown for £4.
Going to put them away for next year0 -
One of my favourite things this whole winter has been an electric throw. I wanted one for ages but they were around £50 and then I saw one in Netto for about £25 and couldn't resist. It is completely wonderful and sits on the back of the sofa ready to be snuggled under and will go campervanning with me this weekend. My house is freezing despite using every hint and tip in this thread and the predecessors, but this throw is wonderful not just for cold evenings but also for soothing aching limbs after over-enthusiastic gardening as last night.
A brilliant buy - mines a Pifco (but other brands of electric throw are available!) and last time I was there Netto still had some.

I guess this is for winter, in a way. Well, autumn at the very least and Christmas falls when it's cold so that's good enough for me. I got a pair of nutcrackers, reduced to clear at Mr M from £2 to 68p. We didn't have any (the last lot broke) but at least now if someone gives me a windfall of nuts or I turn squirrel, then I can deal with them.

Sorry to double post, but I got a bit of a bargain in Wilkos today. In their gardening section I found a lovely pair of lined hide gloves for just under a fiver. I got them back to my Mum's and showed the rest of the family and they thought them too good for gardening (they are lovely and warm, soft and cream coloured and tough too) but that they'd be excellent for driving or winter gloves. So, away they go for winter!

like the others I am going to continue to buy wood during the summer and also some coal. I have already bought some winter boots and a sweater for next winter and will look out for more reduced winter things. Its all getting more expensive and harder and harder to find bargins."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

Today I finally got the Rohan jacket - for half price. And whilst I appreciate it is still alot of money, I believe it will be worth it when the cold comes. I am already pricing logs from elsewhere and if what my log man says is true, that the Forestry Commission have indeed put up their prices, then everyone else will be following suit come next winter. I still have 8 bags of coal left as I have been using logs this year to keep the burner in. But at this rate it is going to be cheaper to burn coal than wood!0
