Anyone getting anywhere with gardening? I'm full of good intentions but it's so cold out there. In clearing up mode at the moment, bonfires are helpful but I find that I don't want to stray far from the fire... Using my scrap paper collection that I used to shred for 'firestarting':D There's a lot less going into the recycle bins too:)
Our green bin collections aren't going to start until April this year instead of the usual March, part of the cut backs I presume, so I've set up my own 'recycling plant':rotfl:

I'm getting an early start on preparing for next winter. I have just had a survey for free cavity wall insulation from British Gas and it's being done in May.

Not often you get something for nothing :j

Good one, Lilme! The cold mornings do make me want to start thinking of next winter (even though we've not had summer yet!). I'll be checking out the last of the winter sales as they come around (75% or less off else I'm not interested!) and will be getting:

    New socks
A couple of new jumpers for DH and I
Some sturdy jeans or trousers that are a size bigger so we can get clothes underneath
(possibly) a good pair of Wellingtons. I have a pair of snowboots but I don't really want to take them out in muddy weather and we're more likely to get that in the Midlands than snow!

Beyond that, just stocking up on candles when I see a nice one or a good offer to put away. We've had a couple of power cuts recently and it makes me want to get stocked up - just in case!

There are some fab winter sales on at the moment. I managed to pick up a North Face 3 in 1 jacket reduced by £100.

I've got a nice shiny new boiler which has been fitted this week :D My old boiler was horrifically inefficient so I should be savnig a minimum of a third :T:T:T

Also, the old boiler was situated in the old fireplace so that has been ripped out, leaving me with one heck of a big hole, ready for more workmen to come in (once I have saved up) to rip out the old flue, change the cowl (sp?) on the roof and then just finishing off to do!

Then next winter I will be snuggling in front of an open roaring fire :j:j

I can't wait... well I can... Will enjoy summer... But will be glad of the real fire next year, esp as my neighbour has promised me a free supply of wood that she gets free from work :T:T

Get your wood now/spring so it gives it time to season over the summer, Frugal. Also check what sort it is as some spits really badly so is pants for open fires.

My preparation is beginning as the price of wood going up so much means I need to get as much as I can at todays prices and store it all. Not to mention some more coal as I suspect that will follow!

I'm paying £73 for a 1 ton builders bag full of hardwood seasoned logs so I'll continue to buy a bag a month through summer and stack in the garage ( it's never formally met the car). I'm trying to find cheap coal bunkers as well. This year having no heating we've used loads of electricity and I've got to find a way of stopping that so I might try and get a small wood burner in the lounge as well as the kitchen.
