Hey Old Stylers! :) Could use some of your advice, if you have any spare...

I have a small semi detached one bedroom house, which naturally means an open plan downstairs. Thankfully there is a small porch on the front door (plus a draught excluder), and I have good curtains over my back door and in my bay window. Thermostat is only set to 12-13 degrees anyway, I'm a jumper and duvet snuggle on the sofa girl ;)

That leaves the kitchen window, which only has a thin fabric Roman blind over it. The windows are good quality double glazed units, but I *know* I'm losing heat there (especially as it is right by the boiler) and I'm not sure what I can do. I can't do proper curtains as the kitchen sink is right under the window and they'd get ruined, and there's no curtain pole at the moment. I do have a couple of plants on the windowsill, too, although obviously they could be moved to the bay window (at which point they will have to pray I remember to water them!). Ideally I'd like to be able to totally remove the insulation when it gets warmer, of course, although I'm not so worried about being able to easily move something see out the window during the winter, as I'm mainly at work during the daylight hours!

Any suggestions? So far all I can think of is a cheap fleecy blanket slung over a telescopic curtain rod, similar to the arrangement in my bedroom...

    Thanks!

    ~Jes :)

The combination of low room temperature and lack of ventilation is a recipe for black mould growth. As you already have good quality double glazing units, in the kitchen at least, you might be better off cranking the heat up to at least 15/16 than hermetically sealing the place in the hope of preventing heat from escaping (which is impossible, it's also going out through your walls, roof and floor) then finding in the spring that you have black mould everywhere due to condensation, and the consequent cost of redecoration.

Deepest sympathy to those with snow again. I think that I would crack up if I opened the curtains to see more snow so soon after the last lot. Fingers crossed so tightly! Mardatha, I hope you had time to restock on maltesers. If not, how about the Malteser Rescue Service? after all, it is an emergency....
    Hugs to all x

  • Hope everyone with snow has had chance to top up supplies after the last lot! I spotted that the grit bin has been filled at the end of the road, i'll pop down later & fill my bucket back up! Think id cry if I woke up to another lot. Got plenty of stuff in it just makes getting to work such hard work!!
