Preparing for winter II

I have set my heating to come on for an hour in the middle of the night to prevent anything seizing, busting, freezing or otherwise doing something to cost a fortune.
Hope everyone stays as warm as they can tonight, these are seriously low temperatures and dire weather conditions.0 -
Im glad Im quite prepared. Im up in Northumberland where conditions are dire. The roads around here are closed and the road North was blocked but think its open Southbound now. Many many cars stuck. Im so glad I bought a pair of snow boots last week. I opened the front door before and the snow fell in. There have been power cuts too further North so I got my battery powered lamp out. My phone is charged so can listen to the radio on there if the power goes and I have a wind up charger.0

Take care, it sounds really rough. We have had a few inches of snow and it's bitterly cold but nothing too disruptive up to now thankfully.
Thoughts are with you.0 -
Kittie, thanks for the info. re temperature tonight. OH and I are supposed to be going to Shropshire tomorrow for a cheapie Travelodge break, but I think we are going to give it a miss. Too worried about our old car seiziing up, Heating at home packing up while DD is on her own, and various other potential disasters! Probably better off staying home in the warm I think. Have not posted on this thread but read quite often - lots of great ideas (and some fun rambly bits too).0

Here in Bristol, it's not reached above -5 today. Was -6 at 5pm, I had to wipe ice off the outside thermometer to see what the temp was. With windchill, they're saying it's -12 right now with an actual of -9. That's unheard of here in the SW.
We've had a dusting of snow but nothing majorI LOVE the snow. When I woke up yeaterday morning, to an inch lol, I dragged a very hungover DH out of bed and made him come for a walk in the woods with me. I made my very first snow angel :j We felt so grown up going for a walk! (we're early 30's so very grown up lol)
I also felt for the little birds, so went out at lunchtime yesterday and hung a feeder of nuts up in the bushes in the front garden. This morning they were flocking. It backfired on me tho as the cats appear to have put one of them out of their misery looking at the mess of feathers under one of the smaller bushes this afternoon
Hope everyone's keeping warm. I've just put the fire out accidentally by letting it burn too low, then throwing a heap of coal on it. It popped and crackled for a bit but isn't doing anything now. Ahhh well, we'll be going to bed soon. Going to get myself a nice baileys first
Holy crap! Have just seen the forecast for tomorrow! Much as I love it, pleaseeeeee let it stay away till midday when it's forecast, as I have an interview tomorrow for my dream job!
SK xAfter 4 years of heartache, 3 rounds of IVF and 1 loss :A - we are finally expecting our miracle Ki11en - May 2014 :j
And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!0 -
power also out in parts of stroud. Started at 7.30
SW and bristol are set on course for massive amount of snow. Potential 30+ cm. will last maybe 18 hours
keep watch for forecasts
not certain yet re sw but looks like it0 -
We have a woodburning stove and we wouldnt be without, it is right if you dont have access to free wood it costs a fortune to buy.
But its not as hard to come by freewood as you imagine unless you live in the middle of the city.
Its amazing when your looking every tree you see there will be branches on the floor we have had ours for a few years now the first year we just collected wood like this, we now have a company down the road who lets us take there wooden pallets after they have had things delivered on them as they have to pay to dispose of them otherwise.
It heats all our downstairs it dosen't heat our radiators but we like the rooms colder upstairs to sleep but they are never really cold or anything the chimney goes right through the middle of the house so I think that helps.
We have cavity wall and good loft insulation as well so upstairs dosen't bother us.
hope this might help0 -

Where are you getting your info Kitty? I'm SO excited lol.
It's OK, i've done all my prep. Freezer in the garage is full of milk and bread and all essentials, booze is stocked up (priorities!) and we have 1.5 bags of coal. Bit short on wood, but have about 50 loo roll insides which I shall start stuffing with newspaper right now!

all over the place but nothing is certain yet, except that it is very cold. Even the tv forecasters don`t know
edit: it all depends where the pivot will be. Front is swirling and starting to go anticlockwise0 -
Our forecast is not above -5 daytime and down to -13 nights for this week. I'm fine here, don't need to go out at all, but the OH is getting cabin fever. I might have to shoot & eat him.0
