Thanks everyone, I'm pleased that you like my lighted (lit?) candle idea. We have family scattered abroad too, so in my mind they can all come to the party! I've even made a joke of it by adding it to the table as we sit down saying that Grandma would hate to miss Christmas dinner!
Kittie, thanks for the note about the lengthening days soon, that really helps! I've had 'winter of our discontent' ringing in my ears!:( I think that it's very important to try to stay positive, just think of those little snowdrops freezing out there under the snow waiting for their chance to struggle through... I love to see them, so inspiring!
First footing, we used to stand outside to hear all of the horns being blown at 12pm from the shipyards on the Tyne. Sadly the shipyards have gone now but I just remember it being really loud and exciting somehow. I'm with you on avoiding the drunks and still feel the same way these days when I suppose I should be grateful if someone wants to grope:D
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

It has snowed and snowed and snowed all night, is still snowing, and now we have a red warning - first one I've seen :D

    Advice: Hibernate - keep warm.

    I bet you're glad you've prepared.

    Best of luck

  • Well, had a text message off Ocado earlier on......it looks like they are going to deliver my order between 12 and 1 pm.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • My daughter and I have just made some lard balls for the birdies, we live on a newly built estate which dosent yet have any trees or bushes, looks very basic, so would be nice to invite the birdies, unfortunatly the seaguls have moved in about a week after we all did, so hate putting too much on the shed roof as they get very dominant, but they are nowhere to be seen lately.
I have made a new mate though, very dainty, small looking birdie, silver black and white, don't know what type he is, but he comes every morning hoping for some tit bits, normally gets the tail end of the kids cherio's,
We have named him 'Norman' Hahaha!
Anyway, it's just started lightly flurrying, nothing much but we have fixed up a treat for 'Norman' on the railings outside the kitchen window, here's the recipe....
A 3rd of block of lard
    lots of porridge oats
some mixed dried fruit, or sultanas
    mixed nuts
and just squished all together and formed into a ball, I threaded a big needle with some string and fed through the middle, tied it and have hung 3 of them from the railing outside kitchen window, so we can see 'Norman' enjoying his festive treat....C'mon Norman my boy, c'mon and enjoy the fruits of our labour xxx

Has he got a long tail TK ? If so then he's a wagtail. We get a lot of them in winter. But you're a long way south so we might have different kinds of birds :) I am sat on the couch with tea and sweeties, knitting yet another pair of socks and watching the snow . Cool :)

wow Mardatha - thanks for that. I'm amazed to see the red warning. I thought is was on for the day but managed to dodge the worst of the snow showers in the end when I took the dogs out and it has stopped now. Dark clouds coming over though.
Porridge on and am looking forward to it.
Cupboards, fridge and freezer are full so I'm not going far.
    Keep warm folks

Is off here too just now, hope (selfishly) that Edinburgh gets it, :pbecause my son has to get to the Borders General tomorrow, his last app was cancelled when we had the snow two weeks ago.
