Fed the robin and the pigeons under the outside table, the tits and the robin were feeding on the fat balls in the hanger on a bush outside and DH distributed a plate of broken up brown bread, nuts and seeds for the crows.
Felines are my favourite

I am starting to hate this weather. Its all very well putting on a brave face but its like armagedon out there. I think the authorities are doing very well given the circumstances
omg another month of this and we are due to run short of salt in dec0 -
Despite being really poorly still, I have just made birdcakes with the kids - just various fats, oats and seeds and put them outside along with some warmish water so hopefully that will keep them going until morning.
I know they are desperate because I saw a blackbird on my remaining crabapples.... and i have never seen birds eat those here - shows he must have been desperate
Hope none of my neighbours saw meI was in dressing gown and my big wellies
I feel better knowing that a bird might make it thru the night now
I mixed up some seeds with fat and put round the garden on fence posts ,they dont come near it:( i can see them flying over the garden and sitting in the trees ,perhaps they have heard about my cooking:D0 -

It can take birds a while to suss out that there's food, but once they do they'll come back regularly.Just wait a while.Once they start coming, you need to put food out regularly.
If the food is out in an open area, they might be less willing,as they are more vulnerable.Maybe hanging the food from bushes or trees is safer.0 -

I bought a bird table and it took them about a month to come to it, the same happened with my mother in law's bird table too.
They love it now and come back to it every day.0 -

We're not really in a part of Dorset that gets snow (we're very close to the sea) - although we did have a hens nose full this morning. But it has been bitterly cold here, and it does cause me a lot of concern as to what my gas bill is going to be like after 3 months of this! Even though I am trying to be as careful as I can.
Talking of birds - I'm sure I saw somewhere that they will eat bog standard rolled oats. Does anyone know if that's correct? Also, I have had an out of date packet of savoury rice in my cupboard for months. If I cooked that up, would they eat that do you think?Aug11 £193.29/£240
