I love Hogmanay, always have. My dad played the accordion and the fiddle and was always in great demand in the old days when people went first footing and kept open house. My mum used to get angry and bang pots & pans about in the kitchen in a temper LOL
I will be in here warm & cosy with a wee glass - but will spend a lot of time gazing out at the stars, asking them what is coming this year and telling them I hope to hell its good !

Aw that sounds lovely Mar. I love the idea of your Mum adding her own percussion to your Dad's playing.:D

We used to have first footing here, I remember everyone going out on the street and into each other's houses as a chld - don't think it happens any more though.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Heavy snow in kingston(surrey/london) right now :( One flatmate is en route to gatwick hoping his flight back to guernsey this arvo still happens!

I shall be preparing for winter 2.0 over christmas and will be bringing back from my parents':
    wellies
    bigggg alpha smark
    small parka
    lots of thermals!!

Due to flipping train stikes on the 23rd I might be travelling home via basingstoke  Though I figure it will be quieter than going via london. I just want to go home now, having last days of work today & tomorrow restricting me is making me really anxious :(
Just had a peak at the m5 a mile from my house and it's looking pretty snowy... but empty. I feel bad for my poor aunt and sister who will be at the florist back home working like crazy with all the doors open getting their hands mangled by wreaths!!

Don't think they will have any luck with there flight. We gave up on are plans yesterday flight was cancelled, acording to news nothing is going from gatwick

Loads of my FB pals are stuck with no milk/bread & the Co-op is rationing it too! But I did go out today for my meat & veg for lunch tomorrow & there was no milk/bread on the shelves.

    So this it for you!:beer::T:A:):beer::T:A:)

I've been out three times this morning already to clear thick snow off the bird table and to try and scoop it away from the base of some shrubs so that the poor birds can feed. They're just sinking so deeply in snow here that they're finding it difficult to take off again. I've made a rough shelter of garden fleece over one bush and they're all fighting to get underneath it where I've scattered some food.
I feel quite guilty that I'm safely tucked away indoor with everything we need and they're really struggling to survive right now.

I put our tree up, my son came to visit and said they didn't have one and wasn't ours nice - and left with it :D

Bless you giving your tree away - see you do have Christmas Spirit!

The snow is relentless here today. It's coming from south east of us (which appears to be Wales - a sense of direction is not my strong point :o). Our house is on a hill, and we look straight down the golf course and across the sea, so we can see when there is snow coming. Luckily we should have enough food to last us for about a week, so I'm hoping it will clear before then. Mind you that will also depend on whether or not the shops have had any deliveries. I went to check our oil level and it's about a 1/4 full - we are supposed to be getting some on 4th Jan. I hope we last until then . I've just set bread dough for four more loaves to rise, but the way the family is going through it it won't last more than a couple of days.

I do hate this type of weather. I'd rather have rain than this.

the religious festival of christmas doesn't hold any meaning for me, but I love the midwinter celebration, its an uplifting time in the middle of the dark dreary days

I've always planned my winter preps to be ready for Jan/Feb snow but from now on I'll be aiming to get all preps done by end of October, a big shift in the season

I remember the winter of 63, my friend and I walked 4 miles through the woods to get to school, it took us nearly 4 hours and we missed a maths test! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    Famous last words
We never get much snow where I live.
(half way between Liverpool and Manchester)

Last night we got about 8 to 10 inches.
Very pretty and if I didnt have family that had to be out it would be lovely.

Thanks for all the tips it has certainly made a difference and at least I know my daughter has a well stocked car too.

Wishing you a safe journey and a very Happy Christmas Confuzzled!

Kittie - great idea about the alfalfa seeds. I have various seeds for sprouting as part of my "survival plan". Really I should sprout them all year round but I tend to go through phases.

MrsSnowy, hope someone will get you milk and any bits you need - the last thing you need is to slip.

(((((Diddly))))) Sorry to hear you lost your Mom - it really does change things. I hope in time you find a way of celebrating that remembers your Mom and is nice and meaningful for you. I wasn't very close to my Mum in a lot of ways but we loved each other to bits and Christmas always revolved around her - so I haven't felt like celebrating since she died in 2008. I haven't even got my tree up this year (but that is partly for other reasons like not having the energy cos of health problems). Christmas doesn't really have meaning for me now as I'm not religious, am not doing it for Mum any more and I can't stand the consumer-fest of excess it seems to have become and don't have enough money to participate in the spending frenzy anyway. I guess I'll get back into it eventually though and find some personal meaning in it. Maybe I will look into Yule, I saw someone mention it.

That thread sounds great - what board is it on?

We got snow - a bare dusting!!! I'm glad because I have to go out later and my fear was getting stranded if it was bad again. I'm glad I stocked up anyway - the stuff will all be needed one way or another.
Hi NualaBuala that thread was on the 'In my home' forum, I moved house during the summer and was trying to save money by using others experiences it was very helpful....https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2502601 (I didn't know if I was allowed to self-promote:o)
For those with sad memories at this time of year. I lost my mother between Christmas and New Year 10 years ago and can I tell you that it does get easier, of couse we all miss her but she would have been that last one to want us to sit around with sad faces. We decided to enjoy the feative season as a kind of tribute to her. I have mentioned before that we keep a candle burning all Christmas day to remind us of absent friends that can't be with us for some reason on the day. I find that it helps a lot.:grouphug:
