Hippeechiq - re the savoury rice - its probably fine to eat it yourself but if you want to feed it to the birds, rinse off all the flavouring first and cook it well, not al dente as it can swell in their little bellies and they literally burst

Also, if you have something like lard then mix the rice with that and form into a birdcake... They need fat more than carbs in this freezing weather :)

I was watching the little bluetits feeding on the fat balls hanging from my washing line earlier - It usually takes weeks for birds to start using my garden once I put food out, but its taken them a day this time which shows they are desperate so please please feed your birds and make sure they have some warm water to drink too :)
  • Wondered why bedroom window (double glazed) was frozen shut this morning - had ice on inside too - never had that before - just seen local coastguard station reported their lowest ever nighttime temperature at minus 17 :eek::eek:

Keep well wrapped up n warm folks
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

That's a useful link Kittie, thanks, I think we'll join you in your Yule celebrations. Must create a Yule log and get some holly off the tree.

  • hi all,

i'm looking into buying a wood burning stove for the main living room and i was wondering if anyone has converted their open fire place with back boiler into a wood burning stove to utilise the old back boiler and old chimney flu? is this possible?

is it expensive to make this change? how much?

is it a financial benefit in the long term?
  • omg. Temperatures are set to be very very low tonight. minus 20s

we have moved all our drinks out of the shed as already one bottle of schloer has broken

watch out the SW as extremely disruptive snow looks to be on the way and then eastwards. I believe that glos and cheltenham areas are like sheet ice. So dangerous out there

the weather CANNOT be forecast accurately due to rapidly changing models

I hope those being battered in the north are coping

I've been looking into this for myself... Sadly, it appears to me that it is definately NOT moneysaving unless you have access to a LOT of free wood...

Installation costs run to well over 1k, then you have the cost of the burner... and the cost of coal/wood...

From what I understand, installing a nice gas fire is a cheaper option :( I am really disappointed as I really, really wanted a real fire/woodburner.

:eek::eek: Oh my goodness... -20s

We've only been hit with about 4 inches but I haven't been out in days!

Thanks to this thread and others, I am well prepared and have no need to go out unless its to play with the kids, which I will do tomorrow as I am starting to shake off this virus now :)

    Keep Warm everyone
