Preparing for winter II
Comments
-
It feels like winter has arrived this evening but I feel ready for it!
- Yesterday I drained the outside tap but haven't put bubblewrap around it yet.
- I got myself a fluffy hot water bottle from Penneys today and it is keeping me warm right now along with lots of layers and fleece blankets.
- I will take soup out of the freezer for a warming lunch tomorrow
- I have draught excluder strips which will go on the front door
- I made a wheat bag which will come to bed with me tonight
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it's cold here...
my weather site says it's 7C but feels like 3C i think they have that right! brrrrr
i turned the heat on last night as planned but it didn't feel as cold as i had expected so i only left the hall and bedroom heaters on for 90 minutes but i left the one on in the living room for about 5 hours.
i'm seriously resisting the urge to go open the vent up more to let more heat out NOW but it's too early for that. i'll force myself to wait til around 6 when it gets dark
right now i'm sat under a duvet with my winter clothes and slipper booties on, time for a big cuppa coffee to warm me up methinks!
i also think i stuffed the gaps in the bedroom window and put up the bubblewrap just in time... did i mention BRRRRR?!0 -
I opened my curtains this morning and found that I had put a pile of dry laundry there last night and forgot about it, and now its all very damp almost wet. Am not impressed, thats with full double glazing!!
Have had a root about some old material earlier and am trying to work out best way of sealing the windows at night, have lined curtains with fleece but thinking sealing the drafts would be beneficial.0 -
Well buying the car ice scraper the other week paid off - first icy windscreen this morning!!
DD2 went to put on the hooded 'puffa' coat I bought her in January, to find the zip is broken!
Not a huge problem as she has other coats, but that was going to be her 'freezing cold AND raining/sleeting/snowing' coat. I am pondering whether to attempt (hand sewing) replacing the zip - I really don't want to throw it away, even though it was only £10 off the market!
Is it worth having a go for the quid or so a zip will cost? Wish I had a sewing machine0 -
It is only now starting to cool down a bit in the house. It has been about 24 inside all day, on the south side and solar has heated the water tank to about 47 degrees. We put a max/min thermometer up on the shady side outside as you get a false sense of warmth on the south side as even the garden is baking, it is so sheltered. I had to water the christmas potatoes today as they are wilting in the heat. I am under no illusions though as we live in a village that will be fairly tricky to leave in snow so my freezer is busting and my cupboards are as full as they could be and I have about 30kg of bread flour stashed in lock and locks in a cold shed0

Yes, it is worth the money, if you know how to put the zip in properly. Make sure it's the right sort too - some are open both ends, some regular, check to see what's there and show it to the lady at the shop before you actually buy one if you're not sure. It isn't always easier putting a zip in with a machine either! If you don't want to do it, you may know someone who's good with a needle who hopefully won't charge too much to do it. It's definitely worth doing if it's a new, warm coat. Good luck!:jMoney saving eco friendly Fertility reflexology specialist :j0 -

Coo, your house is warm - ours is 17 today, and 16 in the kids room. I've been wearing thermals all week, and had to resort to vacuuming today just to keep the blood flowing round! Almost all our house is north facing though, so we have no solar gain at this time of the year (until about April, really now). You can see why I want to get the woodburner in soonish!:jMoney saving eco friendly Fertility reflexology specialist :j0 -
The other option if you aren't doing too well with the sewing is, if the jacket has a storm flap, put velcro on it. I do this with any of the boys jackets if they don't have it already for extra protection. Of course if she's 15 she may object! It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Hi - lurker jumping ahead 10 pages for advice.
Have made foil wotsits for between radiator/wall but how on earth do you attach them to wall - or am I just being dumb? Would blue tack work?
Any advice gratefully received. When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on
