Long time lurker here.....:) Hello every one, want to say a big thankyou for all the tips for this winter, am almost ready and even got my kid sister on board...lol

Don't know if anyone has heard but on the news this morning (BBC Breakfast) was a report on some swans that migrate here for the winter from siberia, they are three weeks early:eek: And folk lore states that there will be a harsh winter ahead, so together with the vast amounts of berries about this year looks like its a comming.....lol

But thanks to you lovely ladies, I'm aready....lol (Well almost:o)

I've seen some flying over this morning which is very unusual
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

Very true Primrose re windows and mirrors. My house is full of mirrors - not so I can see my wee face, but to pull in more light. Makes a huge difference.

Brilliant sunshine here in Yorkshire this morning, just dashed outside to put out some washing. That's one of the things that gets me most about winter - the constant battle to get the washing dry!
    Hope is not a strategy.
  • Came in here to post about the teddy bear mattress toppers at Dunelm Mill but see someone already has done! I was in there last night (managed to resist all the lovely things and bought only what I went for, some poaching pods) I stood for a good few minutes stroking the mattress topper and told DH all about it but we wont be getting one, he gets far too hot in bed at all times of year so it would be cruel to him...I'll just have to stick to thermals under my PJs if I get cold! I'm already in my fleece PJs and sitting on the sofa with a blanket in the evenings (still desperately trying to avoid putting the heating on if I can!) and not really looking forward to it getting colder.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who spent a while stroking these mattress toppers, they are amazing! I got told to hurry up by my 8 year old daughter, so I must have been there a while...:o

My DH is the same as yours and gets v hot at night, unfortunately for me we still have the summer duvet on

I may get one for the kids, just so I can admire it when it goes in the wash (and sneak in bed for cuddles when I'm cold!)

I've also been looking for some cheap fleece blankets to line the roman blinds with, Asda by us don't do them and I can't seem to find any plain ones under £5 around here, any ideas?

Whoever was enquiring about log burners, a few pointers. Do not think they are cheap to run. Also, bear in mind that in the middle of all the snow everyone is talking about (fab snowmen by the way) you will be trudging outside to get more wood. That said, I wouldnt be without mine for all the tea in china!

Thanks, I realise there will be trudging, but it won't be far, the logpile is just outside the kitchen door. And there won't be any snow, not here anyway! And I have been looking at the cost of wood too, so I can see what we're likely to be in for there, it won't be a main heating source, more of a secondary one, but I wanted to know what everyone else thought of them.

Have you thought about looking for those old woolen blankets at charity shops? They're often very cheap (the last I bought was £2) because they aren't trendy any more, but amazingly versatile. If you can get a big one it's worth boiling it in the washing machine to full it, then it's really thick and warm. I've got several in my house and they are all used as additional lining/padding for various things.

Separate duvets ;) I'm thinking of doing it myself actually so I can wrap myself up like a cocoon and not have anybody steal any of it :D

ETA - I've just had to dash outside to get my now soaking wet washing off the line as we've just had a hailstorm. I managed to jab myself at the side of my eye on the rotary dryer in the process

Providing you have costed everything then do it!!! Oh and cancel the TV licence as you won't be needing it anymore. All you will do is stare at the flame. They have a hypnotic effect on everyone - including the cat! :rotfl::rotfl:

I love having mine on and then on top cook a lovely casserole at the same time.
