    Woodburner - Yes or No?
I live in a house that was built in 1904. It's got high ceilings, cavity walls and a north facing extension at the back where the living/dining and kitchen spaces are. We have gch in the main part of the house (ground floor only, there is a seperate flat upstairs not ours), but opted for an electric under-laminate heating film in the new bit. This was a bit of an error because since we put it in, the price for electricity has rocketed, and we had a huge bill last year, even with frugal use. It costs about 40p per hour to use, but because the space is north facing and doesn't get any direct sunlight from October through to about mid-March, is always very cold - in fact today it was warmer outside than in. We are thinking to install a woodburner in this bit of the house, and can burgle several savings accounts to pay for it. Will this be a good idea - any opinions are welcome. Me and the kids (4 & 6) are all for it - because it means they can legitimately collect sticks without being told off, but the OH needs a bit more convincing.

Snow showers for us tomorrow night.. :)

Us too. From late afternoon/early evening apparently. We shall see...

All the curtains are now lined, apart from the door curtain, the dehumidifier has been turned up to "High" and is now collecting 2l of water every 6 hours:eek: and the heating has been set to come on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.

    We even bought some firewood.

All we need now is window film and spare gas bottles - I [STRIKE]think[/STRIKE] hope.

  • Hi everyone, havn't posted for ages. Hope you don't mind me joining in. I'm beginning to think i must be very strange and very alone. Am i the only person who freezes in cold weather even in doors but the minute i go to bed (naked i might add) i am awake most of the night by these damn hot flushes that have lasted 10 years.
I love these threads. Right now back to trying to catch up.

the weather forcast for wednesday says that the daytime temp will be just 4C! i have storage heaters so i have to plan ahead so i'm going to put all of them on tuesday night.

the one in my daughters room will go on for just a few hours as she's taken to sleeping with me now that it's gotten colder, her room never gets that warm no matter what we do to it or how much heat it gets so i'm just turning the heater on in there to keep it from getting too cold.

the hall and living room i'll leave on for about 4 hours. that should keep the house from getting too cold overall. if the temps go up again i won't turn them back on but going from daytime temps of 9 down to 4 is a bit much!

:rotfl:That reminds me of my daughter when she was 2. I bought a gas fire for the big bedroom and put her in there with the boys for the winter. When summer arrived and I tried to put her back into her own room she had conniptions. She kept screaming about the giraffes eating her.

It turned out that when I had moved her out she had overheard me telling someone the were too many draughts in there. :D

    I think so :)
My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly :)

    Remember this last year, brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

That tiny bit, right at the bottom, that's almost green. That was us. The NO SNOW bubble. Seriously, about 10 flakes, and even places in Devon and Cornwall got bucket loads of the stuff. You cannot imagine how riled the kids were. No snow days, snow men, snowball fights or sledging.

And yes, I do know what it's like, I used to live in Chicago where snow is a fact of life in the winter, but boy, were we disappointed!

I know for definite it was snowing on 6th Jan in the London area.;)

I got these Teddy Bear Mattress Enhancers on the weekend from Dunelm Mill, although they're a bit expensive and you probably could make it OS style at home, I think they're worth it. Good reviews on site too. Also, price difference between sizes is £5ish.

    HTH someone:)
