I take it that the 3G version allows general internet browsing for free - for life ?
Does this mean that (in theory) text based email is accessible for free for life ?

My Mum is 66 and absolutely rubbish with new technology. However, she reads all the time and I'm thinking of buying her a kindle. If I helped set it up for her is it quite simple to use or is it still a bit complicated to use? Thanks

Let's put it this way, 'I' can use it and anyone that regularly reads the techie forum knows how useless I am with anything complicated.

It's not complicated and I'm sure she will love it. I've had mine for just over a month now (birthday present from the family) and its brilliant. I bought the cover with the light which is really good, though very expensive. It protects the kindle and makes it feel more like reading a 'real book'. I use the light for reading in bed most of the time but I've also been turning it on during the day when the light's not so good.

The size of the print on a Kindle can be altered which is another bonus.

I must admit there is nothing like the smell and feel of a new paper book but I honestly wouldn't be without my Kindle now and its great being able to buy a new book and having it delivered within seconds.

My friend is buying her 82 year old mum one for Christmas.
  • Hi

Am i correct that you can only get Kindles from Amazon and John Lewis?

I am looking for the best deal on WiFi only and as neither offer cashback through topcashback or quidco i guess JL would be the best as if there is a problem you can physically take it back.

As far as I know they are the only places you can buy them. I didn't realise John Lewis sold them, probably best place if you have a store nearby, just in case of any problems.

Can anyone help with changing the format of ebooks from the library? I am worried about googling and getting a dodgy website, any trustworthy sites or downloads that convert the format for reading on a kindle?

Library ebooks are in epub and use Adobe DRM - to convert these to a format that can be read on the Kindle (mobi), you'd need to strip the DRM first and although there are ways to do this, it's not legal.

Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ can convert non-DRM files between formats (it's free software, though you can make a donation) but this obviously won't work with DRM'd library books.

I have been using my SOVOS (see earlier posts in this thread) which does the job very well.

Is there any news on the horizon for a touch screen version of the kindle. It is pretty much a given that i will get one but don't want to jump in too early.

as predicted, i now have the kindle.

After using the SOVOS with out any issue, i have been swayed after colleagues at work allowed me to use theirs. you get a much better idea of it than can ever be gained trying out in a shop.

I will keep the sovos, as it is handy for a small movie player for DD in the car, or on holiday if it's raining. and she can of course read books herself on it.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p
