The notetaking thing...would it be good enough to keep up with lectures and notetaking (i.e. is it imput through a stylus or key input) as if it's stylus and can keep up with me it would make note-taking a whole lot easier AND I'd have all my notes on one device

Kindle is keyboard only, not touch-screen.
it does have a microphone but it's not enabled currently.
(their are hacks to get the mic to work but i've not tested them yet!)

If I get an e-reader then the mobileread.com website is a must!

If I get a kindle then Calibre is a must have..... in order to convert non Amazon books to a format that the kindle can read.
The website http://allkindle.co.uk/ is also a must for kindle people.

Hmmmmm....an e-reader is at the top of my xmas present list..just need to decide which one??

I agree wholeheartedly with everything here. Mobilereads is a US site, so some of the advice (especially about the actual ebooks) is very America-orientated.

If you have a Kindle in the UK, nothing beats allkindle and Calibre as a combination.

Personally I've not been too keen on the Sony ereader, I just fell in love with the Kindle when it came.

The backlog of orders has pretty much cleared now, I have received the dispatch notification for mine (ordered on the 19th) and the Amazon product pages have now been updated to "expected dispatch 2-3 days" for both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions.

From what I can make out, they (Amazon) are expecting a large delivery in the next couple of days which should clear the backlog completely. From October they should be fulfilling orders as soon as they are placed.

If you are thinking about ordering one for Christmas (for yourself or someone else) I would look at doing so in October before the Christmas rush begins with earnest. It's going to be a must-have item for a lot of people.

Just ordered myself one with the cover and light, as a Xmas present off hubby, lol. Hope they bring out a waterproof case as I do enjoy a read in the bath.

About 'calibre' is this a program that I download to my laptop or to my kindle? Same question for ebooks that aren't from Amazon do I download them to laptop to convert with calibre or to the kindle?

Also I assume the kindle only shows text so illustrations would not show on the kindle?

    Thanks

"Calibre" is a Program for your PC to manage E-Books
It can format books into a type that the kindle likes. Most E-Bookstores will have a format the Kindle likes but if not then Calibre can convert it.

Illistrations and pictures will show on the kindle but in "gray scale".

Have more or less decided on buying an Ipad. A relative has bought one and they do so much more than an e-reader.

    Stlll slightly undecided though.
