I don't think there's a problem with selling your stuff off on an occasional basis, it's when it becomes a business with regular weekly buying/selling it should be declared. With kids they are able to earn, while in school they can't work over 24 hours per week if you receive Child Benefit for them though (unless that has changed recently). (And I think there are exceptions.)
