  • Tesco's in boston , said that any items found retailing for a penny will be imidietly taken off you at the till and put in the compactor out the back !!

the kids toy kerponk was in store but with no barcode and when i asked for a price they took them off the shelf cos they came back at 1p
  • I work at a Tesco store on the checkouts and we have been told that we can't sell anything that scans at 1p. One cashier even got in trouble with managment.
  • Totally agree with the comments made, the staff in tesco do a fantastic job under all types of pressure and no-one is knocking them,

The issue which has arisen here is around a simple policy which has not been written, and that is if a product is reduced to £0.01 what should happen, if you read the daily mail which quotes tesco the customer can buy this no problem what so ever as it is a product which the company wants to sell off...

The issue which has arisen is based upon the staff not being told what to do, and thus guessing as in remove the products from the customer (BEfore and after completion of a sales transaction as mentioned on here), if the product can not be sold remove the bar code information so it will not scan and thus not one of us would be aware of the price and this mess would not occur

Now lets get back to bargain hunting!

Because the DTD on a grand would make me cry with joy :P

Good point, but surely most people wouldn't pay it, or it would at least stop the checkout person selling it.

Better still, don't put any price on these items, just put a notice on the computer that scans as don't sell... couldn't be that hard, or could it?
  • Little Princess socks - as mentioned before were in my store marked 1p!

    Guess things can be sold!

A few pairs to put in the shoebox appeal as I only have boys!!
  • Just a word of sympathy for all sales assistants, and staff who work on the front line with "The Public"

Yesterday I was in the Refund and Exchange queue in M&S when I witnessed a heated 'confrontation' by female customer and female sa.
Customer had queued to return an item, and exchange it for one she had ordered (she was waving a print out - presumably her order)
She was not best pleased when she found out she could only do the transaction at the Order and Collection point.
I.e she had to queue again.
I must admit I would have been complete chigged off, as she reasoned, she was exchanging goods, and had already queued once.
But whilst the poor sa was desperately trying to remain calm in the face of a tirade of criticism, the customer just carried on "ranting". It seemed to go on for ages, the whole queue was cringing in embarrassment.
Poor harrassed sa disppeared to try and locate customers order.... and probably to recover her composure.
Another sa came out ( probably a more senior member of staff) who tried to explain that collecting an order could not go through those particular tills. Customer would have to go and queue again at the collection and order point.
Customer still not happy - and we all had to listen to customer call into question M&S labelling of their tills !!!

"That says Exchange, and I'm exchanging something"
"Why put 'exchange' if I cannot exchange things here...?" etc.

Immediately after she had stormed off, another woman with child in pushchair began to be served by another sa. She was returning a pair of school trousers, which were "not up to standard"
Trouble was it was one of a pack of 3, so sa said if she brought back all 3 they would give her a refund.
    Customer went ballistic.
One pair being worn by son at school and other in wash.
"Why should I have to return to the store again?"
"Why don't you come to my house to collect the items?"

The sa had her head down trying to get on with her job while irate customer was giving her a prolonged tongue-lashing. Sa looked close to tears...... and she wasn't a young girl either !

    Now, don't get me wrong.
I have quietly seethed about wasting my valuable time queuing needlessly, and about incompetent staff, but...

I wasn't even next in the queue - and i could hear every word of both these customers.
Although my initial sympathies were with the customers, I ended up being 100% behind the 2 poor sa's

As some have already posted, they are only doing their job!!
They have to do as they are told/trained, otherwise they will be in trouble.
If you have a problem with the "rules" or how a department or shop is run/organised....... why can you not ask to speak to a manager? or someone more senior?
Poor SA is a lamb to the slaughter.
She cannot "give as good as she gets" she can only repeatedly apologise, (for something which is not her fault) and remain calm.

Sorry if you were one of the 2 customers..... but if you are going to let rip in front of an unwilling audience, perhaps you could keep the volume down.

    Also, not impressed with M&S
These confrontations went on for several minutes..... If one of my staff was on the receiving end of such a public tirade I would have put myself in the firing line, and asked the irate customer to follow me (to a less public spot) where I would have dealt with the situation myself.
A male member of staff appeared at one point - wearing suit and tie. I momentarily thought "Thank Goodness, a manager coming to rescue his staff....." but no.
He opened a nearby till and brightly said "next one please" while deliberately avoiding the embarrassing confrontation going on at his side.

I felt really sorry for the 2 sa's..... and seeing 2 such incidents within minutes just increased the level of embarrassment on both sides of the counter:(

So while I don't agree with many of the 'tactics' which peeps have reported here by Tesco staff re 1p items ( and even the DTD and R&R) I don't think that makes it open season to treat all staff with contempt.

(Wow, this must be a first, me standing up for Tesco Staff:p)

I'm surprised that any of that was allowed to go on in an M&S store as when I worked for M&S last year it was made quite clear to us that customers should not be expected to queue again but they were to be taken by the person serving to the correct till and directed to the front (whilst apologising to the customers waiting there for pushing to the front) to be served by the correct person and then return to their original till (again, apologising to the customers who had to be kept waiting). We were told specifically during training that the customer comes first, we were to drop everything to assist and walk customer to where they needed to go, if we couldn't we were expected to get a member of floor staff to take the customer or even open a till specifically for customer. BUT I do have to say after working at M&S I was treated like c*ap by a lot of the customers even when I was packing their bags, carrying shopping to their cars and clearing up their spillages - no shop staff can ever be paid enough for the tirades of abuse IMHO

Anyway, congrats to everyone lucky enough to be snapping up these 1p bargains, no luck so far here but I enjoy the thrill of the hunt LOL

There has to be something in the till price look up file and afaik you can't put 0p (computer says no). Many of the 1p items are clothes which are price marked. Clearly ideally they should take them off sale but it is easy to miss them hence the problem.

What gets me is Tesco pushing the fact they are bargains
but the stores seem to be telling staff not to sell them... They need to make their minds up what the story is and stick to it.
  • Thanks for this.

Off to Tesco in a few hours, anything I should be keeping an eye out for?

Just a thought, what happens when a 1p item goes through the self service till? Does it call for supervisor assistance?
