Just a thought, what happens when a 1p item goes through the self service till? Does it call for supervisor assistance?

I just wanted to add to the 'be nice to the staff' appeal. I worked for a supermarket while at uni and back then it wasn't that bad, but the sales assistants had very little control over anything outside of the rules they were told to work by. We weren't even allowed a bottle of water on the tills in my day when you could be sitting there for up to 6 hours!

A great book to read to get an insight into the life of a checkout girl is The Checkout Girl: My Life On The Supermarket Conveyor Belt by Tazeen Ahmad. it is EXACTLY my experience - I also worked for Sainsbury's - but things appear to have got worse since then! Bearing in mind that Tazeen is a journalist, what shocked me most is that if the customer saw her as a professional in a suit at a business meeting, they would never dare to talk to her as they did - so why do it when she's behind a till?

Once you've read this you'll never get stroppy with sales assistants again! Brilliant book!

I do now have an answer as well to why I managed to buy a packet of dessert teaspoons at Tesco marked at £3 for 1p over the summer! I didn't say anything and the sales assistant just put it through so I was very pleased!!

  • Not a 1p buy but I got 8 lovely mugs reduced from £2.50 to 25p today from Tesco and also 8 nice soup or cereal bowls reduced to 25p from £2.25 as well.

    Couldn't find any 1p items.

Only the scanner in the clothing section working. The one in Household has been turned off.

  • Found the coffee and the Mints today in a different store from my regular and they scanned at full price

However did manage to get 5 pairs of Thomas the Tank engine socks yesterday for 5p in total - will do my nippers nicely :D

Tesco might be moaning about this but I have bought stuff I normally wouldn't buy because I didn't want to buy just 1p items lol (albeit it was the Fox's Jam Creams at 44p) :D

I didnt actually look for any 1p items today, only went in to collect my prescription, but did get some disney princess pencils with rubbers - 3 in the pack for 25p. There was no SEL out I asked at customer services. Bought enough to give one each to the girls in my class at school as part of their Christmas present.

Can i just say that if Tesco are aware of all these glitches and that they have been in the papers, then why dont they just put the right price on the computer system. Or if in deed it is true what they are saying and its a ploy to get rid of stuff and a cheap price................. why are the staff not told, and allowed to give the customer the item that it scans for?? I am confuzzled...... I dont see its right that customers or staff should be taking it out on each other.......... I hope you all get a bargain. If I get any when I do my shop I will post on here :)

All you can do is speak to the store manager and ask him to let you have some other socks at 1p as she had no right to remove them from your bag. He might tell you to naff off, he might be helpful. Only one way to find out I'm afraid.

You could email terryleahy's office directly at Tesco, but my guess is they are going to get lots of complaints like this after the shoddy way many people have been treated.

If it were me, I'd pop in and see the store manager. You've nothing to lose.

No by law they do not have to sell you anything, they can just say not for sale! Even if in your hands at checkout!

Off to Tesco in a few hours, anything I should be keeping an eye out for?

Just a thought, what happens when a 1p item goes through the self service till? Does it call for supervisor assistance?

no it doesn't but the supervisor can see th eprices on the tv screen at the end, so it's best to try and scan them quick and preferably while SA is assisting a different shopper.

Been to Bedworth today and the shampoo scanned at 2.38, quickly asked for it voiding - said oh I didn't realise it was that much!!!
