Yes - if you go into any Tesco you can buy a cheap phone and the SIM and off you go.
Thank you SuzySu, that's all I needed to know, your words are music to my ears, hopefully soon it will be the music of my spanking new Tesco phone with lots of overpaid job offers.......??:T

  • Just thought I would mention that I rang virgin mobile today and they matched the £10 deal for me no problems at all. I was previously paying £15 a month for the same thing.

    Incorrect !!

If your going the store route, you need to go in a Store with a Tesco Mobile Phone Shop not every larger Tesco store has one, and your need to purchase a Tesco or O2 phone for it to work without having to unlock it.

Too scary for me, I don't think I'd use anywhere near the 500mb, but i'd still always be terrified that some rogue app is downloading merrily away without me knowing and using up my bandwidth

The O2 website indicates . (Tesco Mobile piggybanks on the back of the O2 Network )

With 500MB of data you roughly could do one of the following

    Send 500,000 emails without attachments

Send 1000 emails with photo attachments

5000 visits to simple sites like Twitter or blogs

1500 visits to rich content sites like bbc.co.uk, guardian.co.uk and so on

Download 50 low quality or 12 high quality tunes

Watch 60 views of 4.5 minute YouTube™ videos

can this be done whilst retaining an existing phone number?

Yes you can port your existing number to Tesco Mobile. Or if your already with them on Tesco Payg you can convert your number to the £10, 30 day sim only monthly contract and any payg credit left can be taken off your monthly account. No need to go in store for this can be done over phone.

I just called virgin and they would only match the minutes and tests for £10, so it's the same deal but with no internet. I don't use my phone for internet but it would be nice to have the option there ... I can't decide. I'm not sure if my phone can be unlocked, and the other worry is how long will tesco offer these prices? If they change their tariff after a few months I'd be kicking myself :(

Check the cost for going over the 500Mb limit.

The tariff you quote isn't on line yet, but the nearest I can find for their charges on line for monthly are here
    http://www.tesco.com/mobilenetwork/content.aspx?page=35

They are charging £4 per mb if you go over their data limit, so be very, very careful. By my reckoning, if you use 1gb instead of their 500mb one month, you will get a bill for £2000.

Voice and texts, though, look a bargain.

You won't get a bill for £2K though, as the account limit is capped at 3*monthly, so the the offer the OP has discovered, the bill will never be over £30, also for the OP, I use my data via my netbook and visiting various sites, you are hard pushed to get to 500mb, only if you are streaming like a football match etc , will the data be used up quickly, I also use my data for my sat nav and emails, checking bills back, it has been a long while since going much over 500mb and that was when the world cup was on

    Definetly no credit check.

When I applied for mine I was told that it was credit checked - It's still a credit agreement, even though it's a rolling monthly contract.
  • Do you get HSDPA speeds with Tesco ?

Yes. At least that's what my phone says. Should be the same as O2 basically.
