Presumably the sitting unaided thing is just a way of discouraging early weaning as the typical age range for sitting up is about 6-9 months and "they" say you shouldn't wean any later than six months. My OH was eleven months when he sat up and he had been weaned well before that.

Yeah your probably right, e is 7 months in 3 days and can just sit up for about 5 mins by himself (but seems to be getting so much better at it as the day goes on)

But he def needed weaning befroe now

we fed Kian in his little chair at first. then once he could sit unaided we used the high chair.
Bumbo was a waste of money so got sold on.

Kian refuses to take any food (exept fruit puree and fromage frais) from a spoon. He has cheerios or toast for breakfast---doesnt seem to like weetabix. its hands all the way so anything he can hold is good. He ate 1/2 a chicken pie the other day just with his hands.

getting sooo much better at eating...my worries are slowly fading...although i do still panic a little :o:o

Crawling question when do they normally start that? E is looking like he's going to do it any day, he is in the crawling position on his hands and knees, but not moving yet lol, if that makes sense?

Som - gorgeous pic. Our highchair turned up yesterday and F looks so small in it, I desperately want to take a photo of him but I lent my camera to my parents to take on holiday with them :(.
Oh well, they're back late tomorrow night, I'll just have to be patient.

Look forward to seeing a pic :D Tahlie is tiny in hers too and Im sure she'll be much happier in it as she gets bigger. She fits in MILs highchair better atm and so is happier in there for longer.

Geniune BLW question here, i just wonder how you know your baby is getitng enough food? I personally would worry they weren't getting enough food? That's why i feel more comfotprtable doing it the way i am, giving him his food every meal then i know for sure with that and his milk he is getting all the food he needs

Plus I just think some of the things we eat aren't suitable for e

Im not getting at anyone here, i am just curious

He'll eat when he's hungry and stop when he's full! If he didn't get enough to eat at a mealtime (for instance, too distracted by something and didn't eat a lot), he'll let me know a few hours later so I'll just give him a snack. But generally it's not a problem - I think we focus far too much on numbers and figures these days. Finn hasn't been weighed since he was around 8 weeks, but he's happy and thriving so that's enough for me! You gotta relax a little, because if all you do is focus on how many bottles, how many ounces of formula, how many teaspoons of food - a) you'll go mad; b) there's no perfect set of numbers for any baby so is pointless anyways.

    Just my opinion.

eta: plus if you're eating something not suitable for baby, just give them something else! Finn doesn't eat identical meals for us - when I say "eat what we eat" I just mean I don't buy special foods for him, but just fix him from whatever's on hand.

Kindof, they often start by just dragging themselves on their tummy. Put him on the floor with the remote or phone in front of him, just so it's out of his reach.

Ts being doing a funny shuffle crawl like a caterpillar for a while, but I noiced she was crawling properly for the first time yesterday, I think its cos she was just in a vest so her legs could move better grip on the floor iykwim.

Same way you know they're getting enough food before you start weaning - they eat if they're hungry and don't if they're not. I figure as long as they seem to be happy and healthy then they must be getting enough. I started weaning Alice at seven months and she only started actually eating solids at around ten months but she was perfectly contented and was happy and gaining weight nicely so I wasn't worried. We never had any problems but I imagine it would be obvious if they weren't getting enough to eat.

With regard to things not being suitable, for us that was pretty much just in the early days when some things (e.g. spaghetti bolognaise) weren't practical as they're hard to eat with your fingers and we just had a stash of cooked sticks of veg in the freezer that we could zap in the microwave and also gave lumps of cheese and fingers of bread. Eating out we would order what we wanted plus a side salad and then give her anything of ours she could manage plus bits of salad.

I can understand that not everyone would feel comfortable doing it and although it worked for us I couldn't say that it would definitely work for everyone.

Kindof, I believe that with BLW, the idea is at first that the child explores the food and experiences handling it and initially maintains their milk feeds at pre-weaning levels. Gradually, as the child becomes more adept at manipulating the food into their mouths, then they may start reducing feeds by themself.

I used food to encourage the finger thumb pincher grip, really important. As they get older cut food small and put things like raisins in front of them. They can't grab a raisin with the whole hand so have to do it. Maddy was doing it well by 9mths. Showed yesterday when she picked up my pad and pencil and started scribbling.
