Just gave the dog a haircut and a bath. That's a strenuous effort and a half. *passes out*
And little miss doesnt-like-bed finally went to sleep in the travel cot downstairs, i can hear her blowing raspberries now... Am ignoring her.0 -
Unconventional, perhaps, but not unnatural!

I did have the help of domperidone, can't deny that
I got to 6.5mths of exclusive expressing, then started the odd bottle of formula, then slowly more formula and EBM only on Rhys' weetabix by 12mths
I used a Medela Symphony in hospital (first eight weeks), then a Medela Swing (bought new in Boots for £90) for a few months, then started renting a Medela Symphony (£65 for the first two weeks, then £40 a month) once I knew I was in it for the longhaul (would have loved to have moved to 'direct' feeding but, for various reasons, it wasn't to be for us).
I think Tia recommended the Medela Mini Electric Plus. It doesn't have the two phase thingy the Swing has, but it's a double so will halve your pumping time and increase the signals needed for supply. I think they're about £65 to buy brand new.
ETA: This is the link for an (American, mostly) expressing mums group I used to subscribe to too. They were good for tips, plus the KellyMom site if you've not seen it already
Thanks for your help
I cant see how expressing is unnatural!!
Is domperidone prescribed?? I am currently doing all feeds myself most days then theres an odd day like yesterday where I had to use one feed of formula. I am hoping to continue feeding combined for 3-6 months.
Thanks for the recommendations re: pumps, I was looking at Medela actually. I will keep an eye out for the Swing and Mini, I did look into renting but we just cannot afford that atm (OH been made redundant and me currently on leave).
I am hoping my hospital will let me borrow this pump for a bit longer but apparently I have to go there Tuesday to try to BF properly  this is annoying me... why cant they leave me alone!!!0 -

Kitkat - unless you're getting the double medela mini I would say definitely go for the medela swing. The mini is super noisy so is fine for occasional but not if you're doing it a lot. I got my swing for £42 on ebay.Mummy to Thomas born April 27th 2010 8lb 5oz0

Yup, Domperidone is prescribed. You can buy it OTC (*ahem* Motilium *ahem*
) but it's about £3.70 for ten tablets and the starting dose is nine tablets a day so it's silly expensive, and you also can't buy more than a few boxes without questions being asked by the chemist!
Domperidone's actual use is an anti-nausea drug, but if taken in excess (hence nine tablets a day instead of the usual three) one of the side effects is increased breastmilk production (info from kellymom site
).
It's a bit hit and miss if GPs will prescribe it too. I went to a GP at our practise and almost fell on the floor in desperation (bad, bad time with Rhys being poorly etc etc) and he gave me it straight away (once he'd read the print out I gave him from kellymom!), but then a few months later he refused to give me anymore, saying "nine months of breastfeeding is enough". I got another appointment with another (much nicer!) GP a few days later who told me the other one was being stupid and how were we ever going to increase the BFing rates in our area with attitudes like that and put it on indefinite repeat prescription for me
First off, I'd give Fenugreek a go if you're in need of a boost. It's about £8 for 100 tablets from Holland and Barrett
That and eating oats - flapjack and porridge etc

Kitkat that's rubbish about the hospital! You'd think that if bf is so important, they'd be a little bit supportive! Hang on in there - you'll get lots of support from Elle and others who've managed long term expressing.
I'm off to bed too now - OH is in work til 6. No doubt he'll wake V when he quietly
comes up to bed so that'll be our getting up time.
And i've just realised that playscheme and gymnastics start back up tomorrow, and I need to be collecting J and dropping off L in two different towns at the same time! Hmmmm, how am I going to work that one?:beer:0 -
