I have had an American Express green charge-card since 1984. Now I am retired I found that I hardly ever used it and I was still paying the annual fee. So I decided to cancel it. I rang Amex expecting the hard sell from them trying to persuade me to keep the card. On the contrary they just said OK, they understood my changed circumstances and would cancel the card immediately. My details would be kept on file for a year in case I wanted to rejoin. They even wished me good luck for the future and answered the phone after one ring. So full marks for Amex's customer service.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

I have just applied for the red amex card (thursday night)...called the customer service number and they told me that they wouldnt have my details on the computer yet (????when I applied online) and that it could take 3weeks to make a decision on acceptance..... the guy seemed to think this was quick as if I had applied over the phone it could take over a month. I hope that this is not the normal service I can expect from customer services :-(
does anyone know if the application process normaly takes this long or if he was just quoting maximum times
    thanks

Amex do seem to take their time with applications. My Dad applied for the platinum credit card over the phone and finally received his card a pin a month later.

If any of you got the GE Money credit card as backup for when amex could not be used then make sure that you use it instead of amex. It currently earns 3% cashback on everything and no limit on spend ( this is a mistake, don't know when GE will notice)

If you can an amex card before the loyality bonus month, do they pay up early?

Or are you best waiting till the credit appears and then sacking it?

6 months after closure. I do not know if they apply this for each of their cards, ie you may be able to apply for a different card in their range as they do allow you to have multiple credit cards with them.
  • I like amex
  • I use my Amex all the time...at the current I have the Lloyd's TSB Rewards Amex, but have just been approved for the Platinum Moneyback Credit Card. It offers a 3% cashback reward the first 3 months, and I'm psyched. (Subject to the above a rebate of 3% will be payable to you by us on all transactions made in the first 3 months and applied at the same time as any annual rebate.)

Amex is taken most everywhere now: Sainsbury's, M&S, Morissons, Tesco, Waitrose, Boots, Next (I think). The only place off the top of my head that you can't use it is Wilkinson's. It is becoming more and more acceptable, and if you travel overseas, in the USA it is brilliant!
