Definately use a blender for your breadcrumbs - grating bread is hard work.
I haven't got a blenderHowever, I'm not going to do my usual trick and run out and buy another 'essential' on the card! I think I'll start putting my grocery savings into a jar and then use the money to buy a blender when they're in the summer sales.

when i make breadcrumbs i always freeze the bread first, then make the breadcrumbs from the frozen bread.

I also use bread in soups sometimes. Mushroom soup especially tastes good if you put a slice of toast in it then blend it - go on, you know you want to try it...
Also i made some delicious chicken nuggets using some of my stash of frozen stale bread, but my daughter wouldnt eat them. Clearly she has a taste for mechanically recovered meatMember no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I did try it out -
I used stale bread so didn't need to freeze it/toast it first. emmm, messy is the word that best reflects the outcome, when using a stick blender. But the more I tried the better it got and the less the breadcrumbs ended up outside of the container!!!!

Does anyone use breadcrumbs to make stuffing? And what do you do with them if you do!
I use stale bread to make stuffing, no need to crumble it, just break in bits and soak in milk.
If very hard, you can leave overnight in a bowl covered with a dish smaller than the container and a weight on top, so all the bits get well milk-soaked.
Then squeeze milk out, add a couple of beaten eggs, herbs, salt, pepper, fried onions (which you need to let cool a bit to avoid cooking the eggs in the mixture), and anything else you want to add really - stuffing can be made with just about anything in the kitchen cupboard.
I have added (at different times) sunflower seeds, nuts, chopped cabbage, cooked chestnuts, cooked broccoli, any number of other veg leftovers, or for sweet ones(omit salt and pepper) raisins, plums, dried apricots, any other dried fruits.
A bit like bread pudding, it can go any way you want it to go.

hello, I'm new but I've been reading this forum for a while now.
I cut my bread up into croutons and then freeze it. You can still turn it into breadcrumbs from frozen or if you want croutons for soup or salad just put them in a bowl with a drizzle of oil and stir it round then bake on a highish heat (roasting) for ten minutes. Doing them from frozen seems to stop them absorbing too much oilIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
A GREAT WAY TO USE BREAD CRUMBS [glow=red,2,300]CLOUTIE DUMPLING ( ASK ALL THE SCOTS OUT THERE TO TRANSLATE) :)TRY THIS SLICED GREAT WITH GOOD OLD CUSTARD [/glow]3/4 lb. mixed fruit, 1/2 lb. marg,1 cup DARK brown sugar, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon treacle, 1/4 lb. sultanas, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 LB PLAIN FLOUR, 1/4 LB BREADCRUMBS, 2 beaten eggs, 1 teaspoon mixed spice
Put the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 2-3 minutes. then add the remaining ingredients mix well. Pour mixture into a 3 pint casserole dish lined with cling film and cook on full power for approx.11 minutes depending on how powerful a microwave or until firm allow to cool and turn onto a plate. I have adapted this using 1/2 bread crumbs to flour as I think with all flour it is too cakey. It freezes well and I reheat it by microwaving.0 -

Thanks for this. My grandmother used to make us one every christmas, but unfortunately when she died, she took the recipe with her. My mother is now on a mission to try and replicate her recipe - so this should help! I will pass it on.
BTW, we eat it on Christmas day with breakfast, lightly fried in the pan that the bacon and eggs are cooked in! ;D
