Just buy a pre 2001 car with an engine that is under 1600 cc...sorted.;)

    £125 a year I believe.

They are actually cheaper to tax than the same car that is post 2001, in many cases.

Yes 12 months is 125 or 6 months for 68.75!

Maybe when buying a new car and money is a worry, check which tax band it falls into before purchasing. I have always checked when buying a new car, how much the insurance will be, and the tax and any common faults with the specific car. Always best to do as much research as possible as cars can be costly things!! :)

I can afford to run the car, I just felt like having a rant about the price of car tax. And the cheaper tax option only available to people that can afford a more expensive car to qualify for it.

Well sort of, plenty cheaper 10 year old cars that are older within £1500 get £110 for 12 months tax.

The cheaper cars with higher tax or fuel bills of course are cheap for a reason.

In fairness I stick to RN if I have to pay - I'm in no hurry.

I run a 99 406 HDi and I've just taxed mine at £112 for 6 months. The wife has an 02 Xsara with the identical engine to mine, and her tax is cheaper!!!
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Cheap car: Cheap tax, 3 kids and a buggy, easy peasy.

There you go, some examples of reasonable mileage cars that fit your criteria, all with MOT and tax ready to go. These were found in about 5 mins, which is probably less than the time you took to write the 1st post.
Perhaps a bit more time doing some legwork and less time ranting on about something you can't change would be to your benefit.
Unfortunately car tax is something we all have to swallow, so we make the best of it.

  • Don't worry about it, as soon as everyone has done as they are told and bought an automotive shoe to drive round in that does 80mpg and costs £20 a year to tax then things will change.

Govt of the day will blame previous Govt's of the day (especially if the colour of the party has changed) for the economic crisis and tell us how in debt the country is (keep those expenses claims up lads) and give road pricing the go ahead.

Oh and by then fuel will be a tenner a gallon anyway.
