My mum drives my old 1.8 automatic Zafira and I taxed it last week for £245. My car was £135 last year and this has gone up to £155.

    Not true!!!

It's also used to give the idiots, who spend vast sums of money on new cars they don't need, an excuse for doing so. :p

We see it on here so many time's, they come in talking about buying a new status symbol that does 5 mpg more because it's better for the environment and they end up leaving with their tail between their legs after we point out that the eco cost of producing this new car is far worse than the lifetime emissions of even the worst gas guzzler.

It's about keeping the motor industry going, tax on new car sales????

And how much does a car with a "non guzzling" tank cost that can carry 3 kids and a double pram in the boot?

Before our second twins were born we managed with a 1.2 Escort. Cheap to run and cheaper tax. We were also a low income family at the time.
Now we have 5 children, live 5 miles away from the kids school(our choice) and have no option but to have a MPV that drinks fuel and costs a whack to run/insure. A car is a necessity where we live but having a large family was our choice.
    Just my tuppence worth :)
:rotfl: Big Momma to 5 kids:rotfl:
Always looking at ways to save money or earn it!!!
Now could always sell a few kids;)

Oh and the Escort was £650 and we were lucky that it drove like a dream for 2 years and fit a mountainbuggy double and a weekly shop in the boot.

I just find it frustrating you get penalised for not being able to afford a car that qualifies for cheaper tax. This is where you cannot call it greener tax, but just another guaranteed revenue, as people dont have an option sometimes wether they want a greener car or not, some people simply cannot afford to buy a car to qualify for it, but need a car for day to day life.

Just buy a pre 2001 car with an engine that is under 1600 cc...sorted.;)

    £125 a year I believe.

They are actually cheaper to tax than the same car that is post 2001, in many cases.

Mine's in France for months and I've got to pay French Fuel tax (that funds their roads) AND a UK tax disc, so you think you're ps**ed off!
