This may well be over the top, and I frankly admit that I know jack about UK laws, but just this crazy idea:

Does a till receipt, despite being just a scrap of paper, legally become your property after the purchase has been processed?

If so, the manager may have broken penal law by taking illegal possession of what is your legally acquired property. I'm thinking attempted theft or even robbery. Too bad he wasn't armed.

Yeah, I know it sounds crazy.

Please please take this up with HO in a very serious way. I think the Manager was an arrogant SOB to have decided to keep the receipt. I have no knowledge of UK law either but I would think that refusing to hand over a receipt would constitute some law breaking on some scale. I think HO will give him hell for that if you push it hard enough.

  • Question for Constantine: Is it possible for a store to adjust the system for that particular store to take a discount off an item?

    Oh yes, they certainly can.
Who or what was I before you came in to my life
    I am not sure

It didn't happen to me, but to "4810510". I sort of replied to what 4810510 wrote.

Trouble is, that manager will deny everything and his assistants will testify in his favour, and that's that.

my bf was too scare.... so didn't want to agure with the manger. I still got the refunded recepit, shall i try to ring th HO on monday and try?

Ring HO on Monday morning. You should still be able to get the R&R. Explain that you didn't want to argue with the manager, hence getting the refund for now. However, as you were overcharged, you would still like the policy to be implemented.

No it isn't. The only way they would be able to do this is with a manual override and a normal checkout assistant would not have the authority to do so.

Never thought I would ever post this....but....thats not correct, Ben.

I assume that this is what happened in Joto's store, then. Smart manager, that one. :p

I had a feeling they could do it.

Oops sorry - then my comments go to the original poster :p

The manager can hardly deny it cos there were the CS people with him at that time ? But I think HO will look more favourably on the customer's point of view then the manager's especially considering that the original poster has a good case for the R&R as well
