Mum wants to wear my wedding dress

Sounds a bit like DH, who went from frying-pan to fire - frying-pan being first marriage, fire the second.
We've been very fortunate. In spite of being from completely different backgrounds, upbringing, careers, different parts of the country etc, we were on the same wavelength from day one. I hope that the same may apply to your Mum!
I have relatives who are now on their 3rd marriage and they are the generation below your Mum.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

She took marriage seriously enough to stay married to my dad for 27 years and believe me as much as I love and adore him my dad is not an easy man to live with (very set in his ways!). She has then spent the last 10 years going from bad relationship to bad relationship. She married my dad very young and so has had to start from scratch.
She is also very trusting which is why she fell for Mr Con-Man. We all thought he was an idiot but nothing could have prepared any of us for the truth about him which we eventually got from the police. It really knocked her which is why she ended up with Mr Boring. He lived in the middle of nowhere at the other side of the country. He loved dogs and gardens and had his own hair and teeth. He seemed gentle and kind. After everything she'd been through with Mr Con-Man, she just wanted to get away/run away and be with someone who was transparent and who she shared things in common with. She did try to make it work with him but sadly Mr Boring also had a nasty side and she ended up having to run away in the middle of the night a couple of times.
She does seem to love her now fiancee and he clearly adores/loves her but I suppose its going to take a long time before any of us can trust him enough to welcome him with open arms.
However, whatever the outcome I will always be there to support her, hold her, commiserate with her and take her on girly shopping trips! You only get one mum.
Aw I really hope it works out for her this time! Lots of luck!0 -
mookieandco, contrary to what has been said earlier, I think it sounds very much as if your mother takes marriage seriously, and this is the reason she had chosen to legalise and formalise her relationships. Such a shame for her that she has not chosen the best husbands. Perhaps this man will bring the right sort of love into her life. Rather than thinking she is ridiculous for wanting to emulate you on your wedding day, I tink it sounds rather sweet and naive that she thinks your mementoes of your happy day will somehow bring her the same good luck and happiness. I wish her all the best in the world, and hope she has a beautiful day, and marriage. I asked my daughter what she thought about this.........!!!
Her reply "Mum, I would'nt have a problem letting you borrow my dress. why ever would anyone have a problem. It would be an honour".
But thats just my daughter. I cant see what the problem is personally. Its just a dress. The wedding is only 1 day, surely the really inportant thing is a happy marriage.0 -

Margaret, I always really enjoy reading about you and your husband
I'm on my second marriage and it gives me hope that myself and OH will spend our years as happy as you two are
Plus I always smile (a bit soppily) when I read your tales so thank you.
