Has anyone ever successfully received a refund from the TrainLine.com?

It's been a while since I've posted anything, but I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me with this! FOUR MONTHS ago, my OH purchased a ticket on the Trainline Website from London Padd to Cardiff for a footy match. A couple of days before he was due to go, he read on the football website that trains to Cardiff we going to be packed and those without a reserved seat would have to wait in a queue - first come first served!

However, there was no ability to reserve a seat on the website in the first place...! So we paid £47 for a ticket (we paid for insurance too) he couldn't use. We sent a letter with the tickets as per their refund procedure but have yet to receive a reply or any money! Have just sent a 2nd letter, but am so disgusted by their level of customer service. Just wondered whether anyone else has had any joy? Seems insane that they sell more tickets than they have seats on the train - if that makes sense. Can anyone help me/advise?

Thanks in advance!

Seats are normally allocated when you book & it says so on your ticket. The only exception is for the short distance train when you use it to connect to another service
  • In answer to your question...

yes, I received a refund from trainline. I stupidly managed to book a return ticket the wrong way round (ie. leaving from the station I wanted to arrive in and vice versa!)

I thought it was all ok tbh. I called the customer service and was refunded onto my card pretty quickly.

Have you tried to call them? I hope you get it sorted.

  • My wife booked 4 railtickets from Newcastle to London using The Trainline. She is a novice internet user and used my daughters account with The Trainline. First Mistake. My daughter used her account to go back and fro to Keele Uni! She graduated this summer and left.
The delivery address for daughters account was Keele.
Unfortunately my wife failed to notice the delivery address.......Yes, the tickets were delivered to Keele! Wife rang the contact number to enquire over delivery and was told they had been sent to Keele. The Uni said that as they had no contact address they returned the tickets.
Wife rang contact number again (in India) and was told that nothing could be done and she would have to re-order (200 pounds) then write to refunds dept and ask for refund.
2 letters (and 2 months) later they replied saying that the fault was hers alone and no refund would be made. Surely as they had the tickets returned to them and made no attempt to re-issue them or make contact, they had 'appropriated' the tickets and their neglect in trying to return them to the owner (wife) is 'dishonest' and the intent 'to permanently deprive' has some bearing within the Theft Act.
    Maybe I am wrong......who knows!
So in short.........NO! NEVER HAD A REFUND FROM TRAINLINE

The trainline certainly can act immorally. I only managed to get a refund by contacting my credit card company, and they cancelled the payment, which was nice! Thetrainline were having none of it but my bank took matters out of the moneygrabbers hands.

Thetrainline are scum, pure and simple.

This group of moneygrabbers owns the wretched company: http://www.exponentpe.com/theteam/ these smug individuals own and run thetrainline:

It would be foolish to buy from thetrainline now, as NXEC's website uses a system by Atos Origin, a rival to thetrainline, and this is a lot better. www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com

Thetrainline have dubious practices, to put it mildly, for example charging for postage and charging to collect tickets from the station, abysmal customer support, credit card surcharges, etc... AVOID!!!

Problem is there are millions of mugs who still buy from that wretched company so the smug ones keep getting richer!!
  • Virgin trains were running trainline perfectly well, as were National Express, their partners. They owned www.thetrainline.com. It sold tickets, cheaply, from A to B all over the country. In 2006 a collection of chair/suited/smug hybrids bought trainline.
    This is them.

Since then they’ve started charging £1 to post the tickets, £2.50 to pay by credit card, 50p by debit card and 50p to pick them up yourself from the station ???????
Fair enough these leeches want to earn a quid for their investment but train line was earning plenty when they bought it. They wanted more, much more.
I bought two tickets for my daughter and her friend. I went all through the stages and pressed confirm. The screen froze. I checked my email. No confirmation. I rebooked the two journeys. Checked my email. I have two confirmations of the same journey, for the same two people at the same time.
By all means check their website for instructions. I phoned India. They couldn’t cancel my tickets because the information had already been sent to the train companies AND apparently the DELIVERY can’t possibly be stopped. I have to wait until I get the tickets send them back to a PO Box number in Edinburgh. Then they’ll decide if I get a refund and if I do I’ll have to pay £10 for the privilege.
I wrote to Edinburgh ( including tickets, emails etc.) by recorded delivery. No reply. Three weeks nothing. On their website ‘In the unlikely event…blah…blah..unable to resolve your complaint….’ Then write to
“ “ “CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER” “ “ -no number or address. A PO Box number a couple of yards from the last lot. This man or woman will,he claims, even it takes his last breath contact me within 10 days. I sent it on the 29th September, it was signed for on the 1st October.
11th October no refund in my account, no email, no letter. Not even a crap excuse. Geeked the net and found out the next faceless contact was the actual train company in who’s name the tickets were supplied for.
First Great Western. In their website, written in the first person (I, we will, CONTACT ME), Glenda Lamont invited me, when all else fails to contact her. There’s seven pages explaining how fantastic her and her backroom staff would do everything possible to sort out the satanic-like bad, bad thing that I had been subjected to in the name of train line, who sell thousands of their tickets
RESPONSE time to a letter that Glenda Lamont receives is 5 days. It was signed for on 12th September. Which brings me to today. Nothing from anyone. The amount in question was £28.50. Anyone that knows me knows that £28.50 is not the point.
The point is these people that actually have a page on their site where their victims can view them stealing their money.
It’s not the money. Google thetrainline + refund + problem. There’s hundreds of people who’ve lost more than me and can’t afford it.
In this age of massive companies going bust, send this email to everyone you know and blacklist the train line. Look at those charming people in their seventies chairs, slimy suits and their look that says ‘we won’t just earn our money, we’ll actually steal it from you’.
Not one word of this is a lie, I have the signatures and have downloaded the lies from their websites. They may well remove them but I have the originals. How great would it be to take down Exponent -private equity for the sum £28.50.

But none of that is thetrainlines fault. Your just assuming that they did send the tickets back, and assuming that thetrainline recieved them back.
