Ok let's step into my shoes just for a sec.

I'm trying to run a house, child, dog, 2 cats and full-time job totally on my own and have been battling with a bit of ill-health thrown into the mix recently. I've just spent 4 long frustrating months trying to sort out my internet connection amongst many other things and my desktop pc's performance has been something I've needed to do something about for quite a while. Other things were more important though.

However in the course of getting advice about numerous other stuff I have been reading posts about slow performance as well and trying various things. I came to the conclusion after doing that that I probably needed to upgrade the memory.

Think about something you're not comfortable doing and have limited knowledge of but need to do in order to get something you want - that's what it's like for me and many other folk on here.

I do appreciate the advice you guys give honestly but to say "You did WHAT??" is neither helpful or constructive. Yes I could have come on here to ask first before I bought the RAM but jesus if I did that with absolutely everything I know very little about I'd get nothing done!

Crucial said my Acer Aspire M1610 Desktop/PC had 1GB of current memory and the suggested upgrade was 4GB. I'm thinking what? 1+4 is not 4! Then I read further and found that Windows won't recognise the full 4GB depending on which version I had - it will only utilise 3GB or 3.5GB so I could then see why they had suggested that. Because it was telling me it was compatible for my pc I thought it was ok to go ahead with it and I've certainly read other posts on here from folk who have used crucial, done the same and not had any problems.

So come on then - explain to me the boob I made but please try to do it nicely - we're not all experts on here as I'm sure you very well know

I know how you feel with health etc, as I have similar issues as yourself.

Someone on here before advised me to get 1GB cause mine was under. So luckily for me my friend knew a good pc shop man that did this at low cost for people so she referred me to him. I rang him up and asked him and said I wanted 1gb in mine and husband pc, he said bring them in and I will look at them, then he said thats ok fine.

At first I was tempted to install myself, but then I thought, mmm, I would have to go out and buy the chips, say I got the wrong thing or wrong type for my machine or something, all this came into my head to. If I pay out a little extra and let someone who actually knows what they are doing do it for me, that would be better in long rather then me doing it myself and messing up the machine all together.

Cause this piece of chip also fell off my Mother board when I opened it to give it the usual little clean. He said it was something to do with guarantee I think. He said it drops off after a while, and I did read somewhere about this actually. My PC is sick at the moment and still at the shop, but husbands is fine and typing from it now.

I guess you could try and find a good shop person who does pcs as a living and get them to sort it out for you. Its very difficult when you are doing this stuff yourself and you are not completely sure or dont understand all those numbers, I dont either. Only the memory size and power really. Only because of what I have read and learned from others really, and other sites. I guess if it came to it you can look online for pc doctor shops and ring one and ask them advice also. Hope this helps.

I hope it all works out for you.

    1024MB + 512MB is what you have installed. Don't ask. :)

that thing that someone put up on here, I used it, where it tells you whats on your pc, its a great thing. It told me that I have 512 in one and 1024 in the other slot, which must be the slot the man installed for me.

    Cheers
  • Hope it works out for you Margaret, Crucial are usually ok !

Just for your info, what I offered would have given you full details of every aspect of your RAM, at all different timings, see below :

I could give you specs of mine and you could tell me up to how much ram I could have, only prob is, I dont know how to do a screen shot of this so that I can put it on here and show you?

I just wonder as may be worth consideration for the future.

The boob that you made is that you did not ask for advice before splashing out. A single 1GB RAM module could have been adequate, but we don't know the full spec of your machine, in order to advise more accurately.

In addition there could be other factors contributing to the slowdown of your machine.

We are not interested in trying to make you feel bad. We are interested in saving you money.

Download, install and run CCleaner Report the specifications as written at the top of the interface of the program.

I managed to work out print screen now to work out how to get it on here.

Point taken. You did make me feel bad but it's just frustration and the way you wrote your reply. I do appreciate your help honestly.

Downloaded, installed and ran CCleaner - not sure if this is the info you need but let me know if not:

MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 Intel Celeron CPU 430 @ 1.80 GHz 1.0 GB RAM SiS Mirage 3 Graphics

    Thanks.

Thing is, whilst your computer will (presumably) allow 4Gb, your not going to see much (if any) difference over 2Gb (or even less, dependant on operating system and software used)

But sure, respect for giving it a go (Id just advise you ask for advice next time though, before buying something willy nilly)

Totally agree - I should have done that. Was just frustration at taking so long to get things sorted - I think TalkTalk has contributed to that in the last few months Bigtime! :rotfl:

XP with 1.5GB? - you'd be wasting your money if you buy any more, you have more than enough already - compare your peak commit with your installed ram, if your peak commit is still over 1GB, then consider the much needed startup cleanup.

Thanks Ladywriter - I did get a pc person out to look at it when I had internet connection problems because TalkTalk said it was my computer that was causing the problem (they lied) and he did some basic checks. We discussed the slow performance and he said he'd get back to me with details of memory etc. but he never did unfortunately. By then there was bigger fish to fry so to speak so I had to leave it.

Everything seems so complicated nowadays doesn't it ...... :)

    We discussed the slow performance

Backup data, reinstall vista from disc or restore partition (acer erecovery), disable windows defender, install avast free, restore data from backup, uninstall any preinstalled bloat, it won't be slow anymore.
