    well 1MB = 1024Kilobyte and 1GB is =1024MB.

Its not a round figure, they just simplify it than writing the real amount

Yes and no. It can be used as standard or binary. To avoid confusion you should use MiB if you talk binary.

look under the General tab close to the bottom, should say "xx GB of RAM"

I tried this to see what memory I have but don't appear to have a General tab (using Vista) and Control Panel>System is just saying 'memory not available' - anything else I can try?

Google for " Belarc Advisor ", which is a free utility which will show in great detail every bit of hardware which makes up the computer not just memory, and details about Windows and installed updates and hotfixes etc. It's useful for identifying what components you have so that you know what replacements to buy.

For memory checking, try the manufacturer/suppliers webstes, which will normally be able to check your computer remotely and tell you what memory you have, if you have any slots free, and what memory you need to buy. www.crucial.com/uk is a good one

margaret don't know if you are aware of this you cant just slap in ram willy nilly as there are factors to consider such as your motherboards clock speed what is the max amount of ram your motherboard can handle for example some will only handle 1gb some handle 2gb tops some will handle 4gb and so on an so on. also how many ram slots you have plus many other bits of info, you could be Basically be like chucking in petrol into a diesel engine. you really need to be aware of all the techincal info first before ordering any ram.
My advice give donnie the info he is asking for as you may just be throwing money away here.
