If you are doing the work yourself it's a good project. If not, it's probably not a good investment.
You could see what a new set of locks cost, if it's worth it fit them, then take it for an MOT. See what it's like then if it's worth it make the the offer then, if it's not offer to scrap it for them.
You could be better buying a runner in the first place though.

I spent all that money without realising it. Tyres starting to crack = £100, cv boots leaking £50, rear shocks failed, springs snapped, brake pads needed replacing, MAF sensor went. I had spent so much that I had spent too much on it go back if that makes sense. When the HG went that really was the last straw though.

Thankfully I could claim all the costs against tax so it wasn't too bad.

Tyres starting to crack could be argued isn't an issue ;)

I'd have bought a Haynes manual personally, could have fixed all those faults (except the tyres) for under £150 worth of parts.

I did the MAF myself, but that was £90 for the genuine Bosch one. I avoid the cheap ones because people have had problems with them on the engine I had (1.2 16v chain). I had no where to do any of the work at the time so it was impracticle. My list was only a fraction of things it needed, it needed a new exhaust (cat back), a new passanger window (smashed during a break in) etc etc.

I have a brand new car now but do still tinker with the 13 year old Fiesta we also have.

Apart from the springs and MAF sensor you'll probably do the rest at some time in car ownership anyway. Although my back springs have been so hammered after 80K/6 years I'm thinking of replacing them as well now.

Personally, I think you should steer clear. So many known problems before you even start looking closely. Plus, a friendship could soon sour if you find the engine packing up after paying out for the car and the essentials just to get it through an MOT. Just get out of it by saying you think it would be too much work for you to take on or something. If in doubt, stay out.
