I am pretty sure there was some kind of insurance requirement from 1996 which required all cars to have it. I may be getting mixed up though.
  • if its in good nick it will be a great little run around, simple car, dont listen to all the people on here who have whipped each other into a frenzy about a 15 year old car. If its that bad why is it still about today

Hopefully it doesnt have an immobiliser!
  • if its got a sunroof and it rains it has an indoor shower feature.

by the way mine went for £180, same year.spec with 2 months MOT though I was offered £250 cash on ebay

I just sold my 1998 Renault Clio 1.2 Paris with 40k on the clock to the Car Dismantler for £100. The Mot was due, and it needed 2 tyres, a wheel bearing, 2 rear wheel cylinders and shoes, and the windscreen was cracked (£50 excess on insurance).

I didn't really want to keep the car, and I thought the cost of the MoT, repairs plus £100 cash I got for it exceeded the estimated value of the car if I had repaired it! It had a few dents and scratches, but not much rust.

£50 is about right - but be careful not to underestimate the cost of repairs to get it through its MoT, especially if you have to pay garage rates for labour, and buy new parts.

I had one of these until 18 months ago, I paid £200 for it from a family friend, the price I paid was the cost of its MOT before I took it off his hands. I had it around 18 months and had to spend a further £600 keeping it on the road before its next MOT and £250 for that MOT.

TBH one which has been off the road for so long I would say avoid like the plague, mine had issues after I left it on the drive for 4 weeks (not due to poor maintenance as they were shortly after I got it with 12 months MOT).
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

ahh of course, it rolled off the production line and then the keys were lost, so its been sat there for 15 years

Not according to the fitters at my local Renault dealership.:)
"Fitters" just do servicing, tyres and exhausts mate.

Difficult for them to judge reliability.

If it's cheap enough (ie. Nearly free) take it, get it opened (shouldn't be difficult) find a way to start it (shouldn't be difficult) take it for a test and see what happens.

Worst thing happens, you scrap it, which could easily get you the test fee back anyway. It might suprise you!

My dad drives a 'P' reg automatic, sailed through the last 2 MOT's without a problem.

As for Renault's being un-reliable, I had a 'R' plate Espace. I would have still had it today if the cambelt hadn't snapped just 30,000 miles after replacement. Turns-out main dealers only ever replace the belts & not the tensioners as well, as they know you will be back in a couple of years with a trashed engine, then they will sell you another car.
