My dad drives a 'P' reg automatic, sailed through the last 2 MOT's without a problem.

As for Renault's being un-reliable, I had a 'R' plate Espace. I would have still had it today if the cambelt hadn't snapped just 30,000 miles after replacement. Turns-out main dealers only ever replace the belts & not the tensioners as well, as they know you will be back in a couple of years with a trashed engine, then they will sell you another car.
Doesn't sound quite right to me, the days of "just replacing belts" ended years ago.

Unless you specifically ordered a "timing belt change?"

That said, who knows with Renault lol

"Fitters" just do servicing, tyres and exhausts mate.

Difficult for them to judge reliability.

The very same people that carry out repairs at my nearby Renault Dealership.;):D

Are they fitters, or skilled mechanics?

    Big difference!

Didn't really make a lot of sense though, nor very amusing. Sounds like you've made a bit of a d*ck of yourself to me.

Anyway, they're not bad little cars. Bit long in the tooth now, but very simple and easy to work on. Rear brakes like all things French can misbehave, and the bonnet opens the "wrong" way which can be annoying. Otherwise pretty basic budget transport. Probably a better proposition than a similar age Fiesta/Corsa.

Trust me, I spend a lot of time in my local pub with these guys, only two of them are fully qualified mechanics, the rest are essentially fitters.

Only one of them actually drives a Renault, that is probably only because it is company supplied.

I have this exact model of Clio, but mine is 1996 with 76k. (edit - and 5dr)

I paid £250 for it last year, with 6 weeks MOT. It was a risk but i'm really happy with it and it's still going strong. It sailed through the MOT too. Only prob i have is with the sunroof leaking.

For yours though, no key and been off road for a while? Well i'd want it checking over first but i'd pay £80... Then pray i could get it through the MOT for less than £100, then you want tax at £120ish, and however much a new key is... then ask yourself is that reasonable.??

The problem is, who is going to check it over and how? With no keys, you could just grab anyone off the street to kick the tyres and poke at the stitching on the seats.

In reality, and old car with no MOT is an unknown quantity and I'd be offering £50 tops.
