The sender or receiver can claim for this. However the process takes a while. There is no way the buyer should be waiting for his money. Therefore it is usually the sender who makes the claim. The buyer should keep the packaging until the claim is met. RM sometimes ask to see it.
Sorry if I gave wrong advice but at the post office we are told to advise customers that it is only the receiver that can claim for damaged good as how can the sender when he wouldn't have a clue what damage there was as he didn't receive it and wouldn't have the neccessary items to back up the claim.
Do you work there? If so, tell them they are wrong. Either party can make a claim. In fact both can, but only one gets paid out. The receiver doesn't have the vital items to back up a claim either. That's the receipt and proof of posting. The clue will be when the buyer tells him what damage there is. Royal Mail would either send to collect the packaging or provide the means to do so, in the rare event it went that far.
If you think about it, a business seller only gets the cost to him. For the buyer to claim, he would need the rest topping up from the seller after a successful claim. Not wiorth the hassle.

If it is rare, presumably it is valuable and should have been sent by trackable post. If it had been then it would have required a signature and therefore wouldn't have been left out in the rain.

• Buying online isn't all it cracks up to be, it appears. It's better to go to a shop and buy things if possible sometimes, miss out the delivery man. My recent experience with sofa delivery meant that I choose to go to a shop to pick up a TV. No waiting around for delivery, no risk of bad packaging or being left outside and still saved money over buying online, thank you Richer Sounds!

I've had a few parcels left on the doorstep. I live in East London. Fantastic!

Also had a couple of recorded items just pushed through the letter box, I even saw the postman sign it off himself and I asked him what he was doing.

Mail generally comes between 11am and 3pm where I live. Service doesn't really see too great =/

what bearing does the time have on the quality of service?
im always curious that people complain about it (within reason)
most offices work 6-2ish
yet you see people complain they get mail after lunchtime?

The whole nation should have it's post by breakfast. Unless they work nights. Or been out on the p1ss. Or workshy. How hard can it be?

The dozy git of a postman shouldn't have left it on the doorstep at all, regardless of whether it was raining or not. It could have been nicked by anyone.

I'd ring the sorting office and tell them what's happened. Nothing wrong with complaining, and it might knock some sense into whoever left it there.

I've rang our sorting office up when we were getting next doors mail and they were getting ours. Wasn't happy, especially as sometimes she goes away for a few days and we're waiting for something to come in the post.

We had a parcel left on our doorstep last week ~ postman didn't even knock on the door so God knows what he was playing at!
